No ratings fireworks for Generations comeback

The Big Question of the moment: what did Generations do in the ratings on it's comeback night on Monday, 1 December?

Did it break all records?

No.

Has it lost viewership after disappearing?

Yes. Not to the extent that the comeback can be labelled a ratings disaster but the viewership numbers are down from what they were before the show went off-air.

The show went dark on Monday, 1 October and in the final two weeks of September it attracted an average of 7,840,000 and 8,001,000 viewers respectively.

It's comeback this past Monday night was watched by 7 527 850 viewers. Between 300 000 and 500 000 less. This isn't a significant loss though - it fluctuated between these numbers before it went off-air and before the fiasco broke out so it's all a non-event. One thing it does reveal is that it didn't attract new viewers.

As you may know if you follow our TAMS watch regularly, these figures reflect the industry standard accepted norm of Adults (15+). The viewership figures for total individuals (which includes children and guests) were 10 166 271 viewers.

While viewership for Generations was uneventful, it's return took the SABC1 20h00 timeslot back to it's former figures after they dropped for Skeem Saam.  The average viewership for Skeem Saam in October was 6 206 395 viewers.

For more about how the viewership figures are calculated, please see this article: The Primetime TV Viewing Figures Explained.
