Coca Cola Pop Stars - What was the point?

Written by Dimago from the blog Some food for thought on 13 Aug 2007
Favourite this post

I’ve been thinking….been doing a lot of that since I turned GOLD. What was the point of Coca Cola Pop Stars, seeing that all the groups that it produced are no-where to be seen? Why is there no continuity, no nurturing of talent (or is it)? It seems that they choose funky (who are supposedly good-looking, have some-what of a personality, and potential to be scandalous) people as opposed to people who can sing, they release one album, do 3 or 4 concerts and poof, they are gone!

I don't believe the sponsors, record labels, producers made any money out of these initiatives....

101
101 - This is the first group that won the competition. The only person I remember from the group is Pam Andrews, and she is the only one who has made something of the break she was given(hell, I heard she’s engaged to Paul Viv, is she?). Who were the other members of the group, better yet, where are they?

Adilah

Adilah – Second group to win, personally I thought they would get far, but alas, they have also disappeared from the music scene. Thembisile seems to be the one who’s milking the opportunity she was given. I guess out of all the four, she was the only one who really wanted it. The others were just there for?

GL
Ghetto Lingo – Hmmmmm, these boys! Hai I don’t have anything to say about them. I know they are misrepresenting ikasi lam – Katlehong. All I remember is that they were arrested at a gig in Bloemfontein, and they have been in and out of court…

Has Coca Cola given up on sponsoring this show? Why have these artists/groups not enjoyed the same fame as the Idols artists e.g. Heinz Winkler, Zama Jobe, Anker, Karin Kortje?

I really was just wondering, would be great to hear your thoughts!

It a big flop indeed, I think coca cola should stop wasting money on things like these, even though great artist are discoverd it seems as waste to me.
Where are all these stars except Pam, Thembisile, Ghetto Lingo and the 3 girls.

For Adillah all they wanted was fame. man, celebrity status of which they never have even today.

Coca Cola Pop Stars - What was the point? no point.period. out of here see ya 2mrw

Dimago...do u live in head ntombazana??? Great read lovie!

101...Ntumi is releasing her new album, Ntumiseng. she's been backing for the likes of boZamajobe and some other female artists...by doing that she was actually trying to get the feel of being a true musician (quoting her), i mean after dropping out of Law School, she had to do something! I'm glad she's finally releasing and i somewhat dig her stuff!...even though it aint buy me material. i'll just buy cos it's local and she's looking real good, like a diva!

Pristina...or whatever the heck his name is_the blaq guy with dreads, will be releasing soon...he was on LIVE ka vrydag...singing "baby dont cry...dont cry no more_he dont deserve u!" He's been singing that since 19 votsek!

There was Kurt of something...i forgot his name...

Adilaa...ayeyeee....Letang being beaten by hubby...the rest???? Dimago do some investigative journalism daaa...

Jamali the runner ups are the only ones still running_very strongly nogal!

Mamaneo, u r popping me up! kwa kwa kwa.

As for Ghetto Lingo you guys, they started as four members on their first album. On the second, they were 3, without Bjorn, the coloured guy who is dating the lady from the other group??(don't know about now).

About 3 weeks ago, Kabelo Bouga Luv launched his record company Faith records and one of the Ghetto Lingo members (eish, the one with the long hair o o ratang go loga corn rows and used to act ko Back Stage) performed songs from hos own album. Which means that now, there are only 2 members left!! Eish, I wonder what is happening with these groups. Me thinks ther are useless. But the one with dreads Philemon should flu solo me thinks. He can sing well and with a bit of encouragement from urs truly, the brother will go far!!!

But anyway, coca cola should just give up!!!

Great column Dimago ! - it raises loads of juicy things. I reckon a key reason none of these groups manage to go onto to success is 'cos they weren't put together for the same reasons so many successful groups get together.

Usually a group's formed between friends or very likeminded people who have a unified vision of where they want to be in five years time, what they want to say through their music, what their musical tastes are etc whereas reality groups have none of this.

Also, one of the main reasons each of the individuals would have entered the show is 'cos they have their own personal ambitions and things they want toachieve then suddenly they find themselves needing to shift and change these to fit in with a group who are essentially strangers.

I really thought 101 had what it took to be a success but I reckon all these factors played in role in making them so shortlived. I actually chatted to Pam about it when I was in the BB house and she confirmed that it was a very difficult process trying to keep in sync with people you've just basically suddenly met. I suppose in a way the members must feel like they're putting their future in the hands of people they don't know whereas when a group starts as friends with a common vision they wouldn't have that feeling.

Nice 1

Coca cola is now sponsoring football stars that plays on etv @ around 6pm on sunday. Akere immediately after Ghetto Lingo they started with football stars, and Eric won it. I saw him in CT last year and i heard he didn't go further with the soccer.

13 Aug 2007 12:17

Cande-girl: I happen to work at some daily on the sport dept and I know for a fact that Eric did further his career, but not as well as expected. Towards the end of last season he was training with Silver Stars, now called Platinum Stars. If he did well, you will be seeing him this season!
That's it for me folks, Ta-ta

Tashi
13 Aug 2007 12:22

But they also didn't do anything to help the groups sell their albums. For them to maximise the groups they needed to stay with them and back them for at least two years by way of marketing etc but no sponsors do this.

They're in it for the show (which is understandble) and whatever happens afterwards is essentially up to the winners who get chucked into the deep end of the music inductry, at the mercy of wannebee managers and others who want to get in on their publicity.

I actually think all talent based reality shows simply be about finding a winner who gets a cash prize instead of all this recording mumbo jumbo that's always a disapointment. The new season of So You Think You Can Dance does this - previously winners won dance contracts for big Las Vegas shows and now they're simply  winning 250 000 dollars instead.

jamalis song yours fatally must be one of their best productions, eish hose girls can sing.remeber how much hype there used to be come postars time, joh things change.

i think they shud make a show like popstars and just put all the vocally talented ppl together and just let themselves pic each other out.great hey???

13 Aug 2007 13:14

I think the main issue is that we dont have good/ that many songwriters (i stand to be corrected on this one) n it becomes difficult for these groups to continue without good material....because they r not writers but just singers (except for Press of course)

KeleFabulous
14 Aug 2007 02:13

i lurv Jamali! i think they were the best to comeout of that whole competition (even thou they didn't exactly win)

coca cola once did a press release awhile back on this very same issue. and they didn't drop the idea because of the reasons y'all are assuming. they dropped it for the simple fact that south africa is not really a market for pop. i then thot to myself if this was the case then they cuda changed the name to coca  cola kwaito stars or coca cola afropopstars...they coulda been more creative instead of just dropping the whole thing! but hte whole point is for the singers themselves to get recognition and a start (the album)...from there on it's really up to them where they end up...

Hi guys, great article D-mag.

The coloured guy from 101 (Kurt Herman) got married to singer Tima Reece. Top Billing covered their wedding but I didn't, I just saw the highlights. Erin Samson, the other coloured girl who sings better than Pam. Released a single in 2005 but it didn't do well. Now she stars in that sorry excuse of a show called mmmm........ I don't remember. BUt its new AND its on SABC3 AND it also stars Khabonina Qhubeka And its about real estate.  Oh, I just rmembered, its called For Sale.

wonder what happened to afro-z, they could really sing and i was really in lust with Nigel (da guy with da glove). I also liked Zoeh, from da second popstars- da last i checked she was acting and apperently dating Xolani Gwala (that's what i said) da news guy-imagine yho!!!!! and Emmuanial-SK was singing with joyous celebration. one women that could really sing and really wanted it was Thembsile-have u heard dat song of hers(sumthing abt her husband beating her up and how she didn't listen 2 her mama) I think da success group is jamali (although they didn't win, blessing in disguise) sho those girls can sing, if they were in da states they would be one of the top selling artist- but they r in Mzansi and u know how we r with local r'nb- maybe it's jst wishful thinking bt they can hold their own against destiny's child- what do u think?

Hi yall mablogers,

I just wanna say big up to Thembisile who used da opportunity , who sold her red mazda something for a mazda sting and move out of  townhouse in Forways to Troyville, and there she thot deeply on what she want xtly in life, and we all know the results.

And for Eric and Socca Kings, he was only helped by the voting system of which sometimes it's unfair to others, yes he is cute and the girls loved him, but there was the other boy who hail from Limpopo and have a Mbesuma look alike and that boy deserved to crowned the king, pho ububi acts against him.

that Ghetto Lingo chap...Martin is under Kabelo's FaithRecords releasing some AfroPop album soon, without conrows...  Also popping ,. I saw him on live and don't think buying her music is the value for my money.

It's a shame but the marketing of these wannabe stars gets of to a good start then ...nothing.  Adilah received alot of love, i personally liked 'kdala nisilindile, sesikile, ...lalala.  Letang was my fav, such attitude & sex appeal.  I saw one of their videos, on Channel O and it looked recent, Thembi has the chiskop, the light chick who had blonde dreads has a weave ( the dreads gave her pazazz, now, jst another chick wit a weave) Tumi is looking terrible witout the afro & Letang has gained alot of weight...the hottest in the group now is Thembisile!  heheh, such irony considering....

Remember the Afro Z guys, I thought we were gona see more of them, they were better than 101 and that "phenomenal song was rockaz...."Why you love me is phenomenal, whay you touch me, unbelievable.. chorus .....till fade.

mamaneo, thembisile's grandfather died, i don't know wether it was last year or the year b4.

yes i do think she needs 2 get a new publisist b-coz her music rocks, just dat it doesn;t get promoted properly. i think she should hire u Arthour (999) i mean if he can do such a great job in Choomee ( who has no singing bone what so eva)imagine how famous thembisile will be considering da fact dat da girl can actually sing!!!

i know its not easy to get what i am about to say but to my believe it is true! most of the popstars are black, yea?so if a black person sees themselves near the high ground they just concentrate on themselves only!so i am not surprised of the outcomes cos they thought they are there for good!lol

Mohau. This is simple, this guys were thrown into the deep end with no knowledge of the industry. They were bound to fail. Same with some of our brothers and sisters in the corporate world, who were given post with no prior training or experience. Hence the abundance of incompetence in the work force.

@ mohau...you sound like  those companies that dont wanna hire youngsters straight from varsity/college/ tech coz they only want people with experience....that's not fair.

Every new kid on the block needs guidance, nurturing & all the help before being left on their own. Not spoon-feeding though

Yho! Flo-Jo...

So i guess the difference between Idols and Pap Stars is the nurturing involved. Also if you can look, Idols is mostly backed by white people (not being racial here) as in the sponsorship, the viewership, the judges, presenters etc. I mean they can afford to have idols parties after every show, and as far as i can remember there was nothing like that on Pap stars. Idols was taken more seriously that pap stars hence the dismal failure of the latter.

Guys, this really disturbs me and I have to write. Okay, I remember how I used to love Coca Cola Popstars, and every broadcast I used to watch, even Repeats. Remember how "Who's it gonna be" used to be a hit. That was the first ever hit by a South African Popstar Group. They got the cars, the clothes, the cash, and the FAME! The next one was Adilah, and how happy I was when I heard that Tumi & Karabo who are both from Rustenburg (my hometown) had won. Their first CD was not as nice but the second one won my heart. I thought they would be the strongest but immediately after they sold their Mazda 6's they got broke and decided to split. It seems as if "SPLITTING" is part of the contract because ALL of these guys are nowhere to be found. There came Ghetto Lingo, and sorry but I will not say much about them, then JAMALI. Why did Ghetto Lingo win and Jamali lose? Who is still singing together now? Now, Nne Vida, I am just hoping that this group stays strong because we cannot have Pop groups that Win and break up. All of the guys in this new Group are as old a 22, and I am worried. This shocked me:"101...Ntumi is releasing her new album, Ntumiseng. she's been backing for the likes of boZamajobe and some other female artists". What is a POPSTAR? She could not even sing and yet she wins and ends up singing for someone who came 15 in a similar competition. That is so low. Where is Karabo, Itumeleng, Bjorn, Refilwe, Letang, and the rest? Only they know and Thembisile, she is indeed making name for herself. It is true, those who win Popstars do not deserve it. Those who get chosen are the Judges Favourites and I think Popstars should let the public make the Final Vote, and not the Judges cause I think that is the reason we experience this in the Entertainment industry.

Coca Cola Popstars must end!
