Synopsis
In the high-tension world of the organ donor and transplant business, where second chances are the order of the day, one doctor has the passion and courage to perform the most cutting-edge procedures in the world.
Dr. Nathaniel Grant is a pioneering organ-transplant surgeon who takes risks that other doctors would never take, in order to save the lives of his patients.
Nathaniel's arrogance and willingness to perform risky procedures often cause him to butt heads with the hospital administration, including his mentor, Dr. Bart Jacobs, who is in dire need of a lung/liver transplant himself.
Nathaniel's focus is on his intense relationship with his job and his patients, frequently at the expense of his family.
His ex-wife, Kate Armstrong, works as an organ-donor coordinator for the local donation centre. She's on call at St. Jude Regional Transplant Centre in Pittsburgh several days a week, charged with the difficult job of convincing grieving families to donate their departed loved ones' organs.
Nathaniel and Kate's volatile relationship demands a delicate balance as they struggle to raise their daughter, Thea, amidst the ever-present demands of saving lives.
Working with Nathaniel are Dr. Thomas Jonas, who has returned to St. Jude 14 years after working a fellowship with Nathaniel; Dr. Simon Griffith, who is still somewhat green; Nathaniel's girlfriend, nurse Jessica Kivala; and insightful and caring nurse Mary Singletary.
