Season 1
This series, created by uber-author Michael Crichton, is set in the Emergency Room of a busy Chicago hospital. It follows the doctors and nurses through both their personal and professional lives and draws you in to their trials and tribulations.
Season 1 introduces us to some of the most memorable characters in television.
There's Dr Mark Greene, a good doctor struggling to balance his professional roles with his personal life.
Then we have the unforgettable Dr Doug Ross, the ladies man who can't decide on his relationship with Nurse Carol Hathaway, who has her own emotional and psychological issues to deal with.
We also get to meet the hapless Dr Carter, the newly qualified doctor, who in addition to having to get used to the new job, has to contend with the tough Doctor Peter Benton, who derives great pleasure from torturing Carter.
We're also introduced to the tough Dr Susan Lewis.
Season 1 sees Carol Hathaway struggling to find her feet after her suicide attempt and to resolve her relationship with Dr Ross. Her engagement to another doctor does little to help the situation. Dr Greene is uncertain about the future of his marriage and becomes the target of a malpractice suit.
Dr Susan Lewis has to deal with her irresponsible sister's pregnancy and the likelhood of having to raise the child herself.
Dr Carter continues to struggle and fight for his place at the hospital while Dr Benton competes for a Fellowship, all the while dealing with a senile mother at home.
A thoroughly gripping first season that established ER as one of the finest television drama series ever.
