Season 2
The theme for the second season of Mfolozi Street is dirty laundry, and the premise is that every family has it secrets and within the heart of this secret lies every house's truth.
Season 2 explores the challenges of trying to create a legacy, a life and a career in modern day South Africa where truth is variable depending on its teller, and the shades of mistruths in between are where most people stumble.
Samson's quest for belonging and identity sit at the centre of this story, as he leans on the members of the community to try and help him become a legal person in South Africa - something that all the households of Mfolozi Street are more than eager to assist with, because his problems seem more resolvable than their own.
We come to truly understand over the course of this season that people are often eager to help others, because focussing on another person's problems helps to hide our own brokenness.
The people of Mfolozi Street are forced to face their own personal truths and the consequences of their past choices and lies in this season. Before the truth can set you free, it is important to understand which truth holds you hostage.
Everyone comes face to face with their truths in this season. We come to understand that Samson's great anger comes from the fact that he never got his ID, and that his grandmother died trying to resolve this matter and failing.
Dennis has been left as trustee of Samson's inheritance while Samson tries to resolve this matter, a secret that he keeps from his wife, unlike the secret he shares with Portia about his sexual orientation – which they have decided to treat as an affliction that they can cure.
But Samson's desperation and depression leads to the elders of this street to try and deal with the matter by having a tombstone unveiling for Miriam, where Samson's long lost mother Sibongile Pelompe appears, much to Mkhulu's trepidation.
Mfolozi Street is produced by Fuzebox Productions. The producers are Khetiwe Ngcobo and Mokopi Shale and the directors are Adze Ugah and Riaan Hendricks.
