Following on the quiz buzz of Temptation SA, pay channel M-Net have announced the 2007 launch of the international game show Deal or No Deal.
The 26 episode show is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, 4 February 2007 at 18h00 and offers contestants the opportunity of becoming millionaires every episode.
The format of the weekly show sees 26 suitcases presented to one contestant by 26 glam models. Each suitcase contains mystery amounts ranging from R1 to R1 000 000 which the contestant needs to Deal with.
To begin the action the contestant chooses one suitcase that remains unopened to be their ultimate prize if they turn down the deals made by the show’s banker who negotiates buying their suitcase from them at various intervals.
The contestant then proceeds to open the remaining 25 suitcases and attempts to work out how much money their suitcase contains while trying to outwit the banker who makes offers based on the value of each suitcase revealed. If the contestant makes No Deal by the time they’ve opened all 25 the 26th suitcase is theirs and of course, if they take a Deal before the end they face the chance that the million bucks is in their mystery case .
The show is a highly successful format that’s been produced in over fifty countries since its premiere in the Netherlands in 2001. Both this Dutch version and the Belgian one are called Miljoenenjacht, the US Spanish version is called Vas o No Vas and the Turkish show is called Buyuk Teklif. In some counties the format varies, for instance in the UK where it's also called Deal Or No Deal there are 22 suitcases.
The format is owned by Endemol (the creators of Big Brother and Fear Factor) and Endemol SA are producing the show for M-Net. Carl Fischer, Head of M-Net Original Productions, says that there is a clear demand for quality game shows on South African television.
“Before Temptation, we hadn’t produced a gameshow since 2000’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It was a case of finding a compelling format which has all the elements - drama, fun, humour and entertainment, and we believe that we’ve found that in Deal or No Deal,” he says.
The roles of the banker and show host are currently being cast and will be announced soon and M-Net’s made a casting call for both contestants as well as suitcase models. All contestant entries must be made via M-Net’s website or using entry forms which will appear in The Sunday Times and City Press on 15 October only. Entries close at midnight on 3 November, 2006.
Entries for models must also be done via the website and FHM’s Novermber issue will contain will further details. Entries for models close at midnight on 29 November.
