Idols 8: Top 5 Spectacular
Rolling Stone Top 500
The Idols finalists during a meet-and-greet with fans in Sandton.
Idols Season 8 is halfway done, with only five contestants left to compete for the title of South Africa’s next Idol. This week, in between a busy schedule of homecoming visits, the Top 5 are preparing a Spectacular based on Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 500 songs ever and each contestant gets to perform two songs - one of their own choosing and one chosen for them by top South African radio DJ’s.
For “PK” from Durban, Khaya Mthethwa, those two songs are the Marvin Gaye classic “Let’s Get It On” and Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness’.
Monde Msutwana from Pretoria is hoping that the U2 anthem “One” and Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” will propel him out of the danger zone in the Bottom 2 where he found himself this week.
P.E.’s Melissa Allison chose Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” and the Tina Turner classic “Proud Mary” was chosen for her.
Simphiwe Gwegwe, the Pride Of Port Nolloth, is going with Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and the Bob Marley classic “No Woman No Cry” and last but not least, Tshidi Tenyane from Thokoza is performing John Lennon’s “Imagine” and another Tina Turner classic, “River Deep, Mountain High”.
Helping the Top 5 with their demanding preparations this week will be the very accomplished Zolani Mahola from the SAMA-winning Afro-Soul group Freshlyground.
The Idols Season 8 Top 5 Spectacular airs on M-Net and M-Net HD and Mzansi Magic on Sunday, 9 September at 17:30.
