Do you find yourself remembering the freakazoid woman who turned into an owl on Ululu Ubuyile? Do you
Ubambo Lwami, .
hese shows?
TVSA members have spoken about them all before, wanting to see them again For the Nostalgia. TVSA blogger Cheesa reminisced about them back in 2010 in a post called
TV programs that need to make a comeback and now there's a dedicated channel for them.
The SABC's launching a fifth channel on DStv soon - on Monday, 11 May
. Eventually - after years of talking about it. It was supposed to be called SABC Entertainment but it's changed to SABC Encore and it's dedicated to series from the past, specifically from the 1980's and '90's - which will elicit screams from flatscreen TVs obviously.
According to SABC's Head of Television Verona Duwarkah: "Sometimes you'll even laugh at the quality of the actual production in the old days because we've learnt so much."
The picture may be dodgy and the channel may be too similar to the other SABC channels which are already crammed with repeats but the channel will do well - and would do even better if it wasn't on DStv.
It's going to be on Channel 156 on all of the DStv bouquets and will do well if current trends are anything to go by. It's clear that South Africans are nostalgic for TV from the past and despite the many complaints from viewers about endless repeats - they're popular.
Death of a Queen's been repeated over and over (and over!) again on SABC1 and it's consistently one of the top shows when it's on, attracting audiences of between three to five million viewers, making it to the Top 10 shows in the country.
TVSA receives constant queries from people wanting to know where they can get or buy series from the past so people are willing to pay for them too. There's clearly an appeal to them for many viewers.
Will you watch? Which series would you most like to see on the channel?
