The Vula Connection
Channel: SABC2
TX Time: 21h00
Genre: Documentary
This documentary tells the story of Tim Jenkin, an unlikely revolutionary.
A white South African who fought against his own government, Tim committed his head to the struggle against Apartheid as much as his heart.
Jenkin placed himself in extreme danger by volunteering for undercover work in Cape Town.
He was caught and dispatched to a high security prison but against all odds, his patience and meticulous attention to detail got him and two prisoners through 10 locked doors... to freedom.
Growing up in a quiet suburb in Cape Town during the politically turbulent 1970s, Jenkin made the unusual decision to abandon his privileged upbringing and join the anti-Apartheid struggle.
Risking his life, he volunteered to work undercover for the then-banned African National Congress.
He churned out inflammatory propaganda and distributed pamphlets by setting off leaflet bombs in busy city centres.
This would see him branded a traitor and locked up in a high security prison.
After a miraculous escape, he found himself in the backrooms of the ANC's exiled military wing.
Working from a nondescript flat in London, he set about designing an ingenious secret communication system which enabled underground operatives to dodge South Africa's feared intelligence service, and penetrate the country's borders.
Long before the Internet took off, Jenkin worked out how to send encrypted messages down a telephone line to public phones.
This unique communication system enabled the highly secretive Operation Vula, which smuggled cadres and weapons into South Africa.
And in the hands of crack commander Mac Maharaj, Operation Vula also helped smuggle messages to an imprisoned Nelson Mandela, connecting him with his comrades in exile.
