Bio

Johan Stemmet is best known to South African audiences as the presenter and producer of the Afrikaans language music game show Noot vir Noot, since 1991.

Johan was born in Springbok in the Northern Cape and grew up in Kleinzee, a diamond mine on the West coast of Namaqualand.

He went to high school in Cape Town and after school went on to study law, languages and education at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. While at both institutions he played cricket and rugby and participated in swimming and athletics as well as karate.

After completion of his studies he taught Languages and History at Rondebosch Boys High School from 1974 to 1980 and was head of the Afrikaans First Language Department.

His TV career began in 1980 when he started producing and presenting music and variety programmes for the SABC.

He produced, directed and presented various variety and game shows with local and international artists such as Horst Jankowski and Nana Mouskouri. Ten years later he conceived and launched Noot vir Noot with his life-long friend Johan van Rensburg.

Since then the show has gone on to become the longest-running game show in the history of South African TV and premiered with it's 30th season on 7 December 2007.

It has also been syndicated to the UK where it was known as "Michael Barrymore's My Kind of Music" and had a very successful six-year run.

In 1997, Johan also produced the game show "A Word Or 2", which ran for nine years on SABC2 and in 2004 he produced the Educational game show "Wise Up", which is in its fourth season on SABC2. This show was nominated for the Japan Prize for Educational TV in 2006 and featured on NHK Japan.

His other production credits include the documentary "Fly The Beloved Country" which was inspired by his love of piloting gyro-copters. He holds a night and instrument rating on single and twin engine aircraft and has 3500 solo flying hours to his credit.

In addition to presenting and producing TV shows, Johan has also had a long-lasting singing career that he launched in 1972 with the album Johan Stemmet Live at Devon Valley.

Twelve albums followed between 1980 and 1999. During this time he won numerous awards including the SARI award for Best Afrikaans Album (Bianca) in 1982 and Song Of The Year (for the track 'n Dans Met Pa) in 1991.

After a seven year hiatus from singing, Johan released Johan Stemmet - Inspirational Songs, in 2006. The album is an ensemble of his favourite songs and was released with the backing of SABC2. It reached No. 1 on the South African Gospel Top 20 three weeks after its release and sold 14,000 copies within the first four days.

He has won three Avanti awards and an Artes Award as well as various other awards presented to him by South African cultural organizations such as the FAK and ATKV for his contribution to television and the local music industry.

In 2007 he was awarded a Golden Plume Award by SABC for his Contribution to the South African Broadcast Industry.

Johan is married to Colleen, who is Deputy Headmistress and head of the Mathematics Department at Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg. Johan has two sons, Etienne and Carl.

Carl was a K-TV children's presenter on M-Net for six years and is currently a movie director, script writer and actor. He also lectures in on-camera acting at the University of Pretoria, where he is completing his Masters degree in Drama.

Carl played the role of Jamie Dekker in the SABC2 mini-series Huis van Liefde, in March 2008.

Etienne was a children's presenter on SABC2's KIDZ CAN during his primary school. He is currently completing his Honours Degree in Information Science (specialising in multimedia) at the University of Pretoria.
