Bio
Blaze Blasbalg is a South African dancer best known as one of the Top 20 contestants on the SABC1 reality television competition So You Think You Can Dance, in 2008.
He is from Johannesburg.
Blaze was rushed to hospital on Tuesday 16 September after feeling ill, and while there reacted badly to medication given to him.
He was unable to perform the following Saturday with his partner Marise Dusheiko, who danced with choreographer's assistant Morena Nyaka instead.
The show's producers hoped he would recover in time to "dance for his life" in the Tuesday elimination show, but he was not fit to perform and was thus automatically disqualified from the competition. He was the third person to leave the Top 20.
Q&A
Your profession:
Hip-Hop, Break dancer
Your dance history/experience:
I started dancing about 6-7 years ago, I taught myself how to break-dance using video clips until I met more ‘b-boys’ and started training with them.
Since then I’ve progressed and started teaching break-dance and performing. I’ve performed at corporate functions, parties and clubs. I went to the U.S.A in 2006 to compete in L.A championships. I danced with 4 other members and we came 5th in the break dancing and world championships.
I performed in Opera Mania earlier this year. I’ve had 6 lessons of ballet - no formal training.
Your favourite dance genre:
Breakdancing
What will you do with the R250 000 if you win?
I’ve already promised my boy ‘Elly’ I would share some of the money with him. Give my parents some and spoil myself a little!
What will you bring to the competition that's different?
I am the only break-dancer in the Top 20 so that should help me. I have dynamic moves and tricks that will spice up routines.
What’s your message for your soon-to-be fans?
I will just say follow your heart and do what makes you happy. Don’t throw away your talents because everyone is an individual. Have fun with whatever you do because at the end of the day it’s what makes YOU happy. Enjoy the competition and please vote for me!
