Eckard was born in St Winifreds, Natal. He grew up in Port Shepstone where he attended both Junior and High School.He studied at the University of Natal in Durban and attained a Bachelor of Honours in Speech and Drama. He taught English at a High School before joining the Performing Arts Council (PACT) in Pretoria in 1972.Eckard worked for PACT for four years performing exclusively on stage. In 1976 he began freelancing and has since appeared in countless stage & television productions, the most noteworthy being the TV series Westgate in the early 80's.He is also a qualified commercial pilot and flying instructor. Eckard has many hobbies including tennis, windsurfing and sailing.
