Derek Watts was an investigative TV journalist best known as an anchor on the M-Net current affairs investigative show Carte Blanche, where he presented for 35 years.
In June 2023 he announced he was taking a break from the show to focus on his health after being diagnosed with skin cancer in 2022, which spread to his lungs. He was diagnosed with severe sepsis three months prior to this when he was hospitalised after collapsing during a family trip .
In July 2023 he revealed that he wouldn't be returning to Carte Blanche.
He died on Tuesday 22 August, 2023 at the age of 74.
