Africa Day is coming up on Monday, 25 May 2009 and Animal Planet (DStv channel 264) is commemorating it in June with a follow-up month of programming dedicated to Africa.
First celebrated in 1963, the day marks the creation of the African Union and celebrates unity, African heritage and togetherness across the continent.
The line-up on Animal Planet intends to showcase these ideas by spotlighting shows that focus on the unity of relationships between people, animals and the environment within an African context.
Shows coming up include Wild Dog Island, which explores the lives of wild dogs in Africa - one of the continent's most endangered species.
There's also Animal Park: Wild in Africa, which visits some of Africa’s dramatic locations to get up close to the wildlife who call these places home; and Chimp Diary returns with an update on the chimps in a new season called Chimp Family Fortunes.
Big Cat Diaries returns for Season 7 (starring the regular cast of supercats) and Meerkat Manor premieres a re-run of Season 4.
Keep a lookout on TVSA at the end of May for further info. about each show. Also coming up: more news about other Africa Day shows.
