Africa Day: On Mary Fitzgerald And SABC2

africa_day_2As has been mentioned, Africa Day is coming up on Monday, 25 May and TV broadcasters and party planners are spicing things up for it.

This year marks the 46th year of the celebration, which honours togetherness, African heritage and continental unity. The day was first launched in 1963 when the now-African Union was formed.

Following the tradition of the past nine years, Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown will host a companion concert featuring musos from across Africa. The concert will be on Saturday, 23 May, entry is free and the gates open at 15h00.

The line-up includes Nigerian vocalist Asa, Senegalese hip-hopper Awadi, Benin’s Gang’be, South Africa’s Gang of Instrumentals and the Parlotones; and Angola's Yuri da Cunha.

Last year the City of Jozi provided blankies and those cool furnace-type things for warmth - we imagine they will again this year considering the winter weather that's moved in as if it owns the place.

The action will be broadcast on SABC2 from 22h00. (We have no idea why so late - they should cross over to it in between shows throughout the event, as they do on New Years Eve.)
