It's been two years since the
Survivor South Africa: Malaysia, which was won by policewoman
Lorette Mostert.
Today M-Net announced a third season of the show - which will feature celebrities competing for prize money that will go to charity.
The paycaster has commissioned Endemol South African to produce the series, which will be shot at "an exotic, but desolate, location in the Indian Ocean".
According to Helen Smit, M-Net's Head of Local Content, the format will remain the same as traditional versions of Survivor.
"It will be the Real McCoy; Survivor in all its television splendour and challenges. We're not planning to change the format to make it easier for our celebs", she said.
We know, however, that there will be at least one format change - according to M-Net, the longer celebs stay in the game, the more money they will make for the charity of their choice.
Another change for the new season will be the host of the show - former host
Mark Bayly is currently presenting M-Net's magazine show
All Access, and is thus unavailable for hosting duties.
As yet, no new host has been cast.
The casting process for the new season of Survivor is still in process and musicians, models, television presenters and actors who think they are up for the challenge, and are available for filming in November and December 2009, can email
celeb@mnet.co.za to apply.
"It will be interesting to see which celebs are whisked off to the island," says Smit. "It’s important to have a mix of personalities and entertainers who will stir the pot and create unforgettable Survivor intrigue.
"All potential candidates will also have to undergo the Survivor medical and psychological tests."
Well... our celebs are usually in pretty good physical shape, but psychological? We foresee some challenges for our friends doing the casting.
Provided strong celebs are cast in the show, and it doesn't deviate too much from the traditional format, this new version could well be a winner. There's something to be said for watching celebrities getting eaten alive by fire ants and half starving to death.
What do you think? Which celebrities would you like to see suffer? Which celebs would adapt best to the harsh conditions? Who is most likely to win the game? And who should host the show?
