On Saturday night (20 February 2010) the 4th annual South African Film and Television Awards took place at the State Theatre in Pretoria and almost knocked guests and viewers into a coma.

Despite the many complaints and criticisms last year about the ceremony being much too long and drawn-out, the exact same problem struck this year: except this time round lots of the nominees - and winners specifically - decided that it was more trouble than it was worth to actually pitch up.

Winners in numerous categories weren't around to collect their Golden Horns and there was clearly no directorial plan as to what to do when it happened. A random selection of their fellow cast members shuffled in to try to save the show, emerging from an auditorium that thinned out as the hours went on and on and .... 'zzzzz (to the backdrop of VERY bad dancers).

If you didn't manage to make it through seeing who won, here are the nominees in the main television categories, with the winners in red:

South African actors are ungreatful, why they not pitch, the first 30mins was bad,no one was there to pick up an award.Saftas have potential to be huge but they do not appreciate.why werent the norminees in front, seem to battle getting to stage

It's a fact, afrikaners vote- unlike us black people who rely on "please call me and free smss". Winning of Sewen de laan is just testament to that. If we did buy airtime and voted then we wouldn't be complaining ngoku.

I think the problem with the SAFta's is they are not up to date hence so much controvery around the winners,

most of the shows are really old and makes it hard for us to reconnect with their "greatness"

I mean last year all the Shaespeare mini drama's got some awards? or was I dreaming, but anyway it dont matter, the bottom line is somehow they need to have specific dates where the productions fall like 0 Dec 09 to 31 Oct 10 for next year so that at least it is clear which talent is being honored.....

Luksta
22 Feb 2010 11:31

@myname: 7 de Laan  = 7th Avenue
Mara 3 hours was too much, they should just mention other awards e.g. Hair & Makeup, Music compsitions, cinematography etc!

22 Feb 2010 11:47

The speeches from the winners WERE EXTREMELY LONG:
I would like to thank my grandparents for transporting me tirelessy to school of drama. to my parents i know that you love me and support what i am doing which is why you flew all the way from Durban to come here. to my friend, mentor, husband and shag mate and lover thank you for everything.

i bet some were left just to say ' cant wait to have you tonite as we celebrate teh award'

the awards were the worst thing to happen to SA television.

poor planning and wht was the name of the white dude who hosting?

myname
22 Feb 2010 11:50

Thanks Dini & Luksta.

Eish they have been doing these awards 4 more than 3 times now bt they still got them wrong. I think they need to stop doing them. Why bangenzi something else not this humiliation. Im sure the organisers r kicking their a****. Andisathethi ke nge sponsors if they have.....

22 Feb 2010 12:32

My brother actually told me that prison is more fun than watching anything that the SABC organises/produces these days. I have a few exceptions ofcoz, e.g. The Lab, Isidingo, Stokvel and A Place Called Home -- see, these are brlliant productions and deserve recognition. As for the event; they should run a news scroll during the 19h00 or 19h30 news bulletin with the winners than waste 3 hours of our lives with such crap.

blueroze
22 Feb 2010 12:39

i loved it when that guy wanted to "terma" us and said sweatful?? sweatless???.....
him, stone, john, the kid in clown suit were all kwa worthy

they will understand the meaning of rehersals or preparing a speech, except for my top dawg john!! (arme skepsel wanted t oplay mandela in Invictus)

carino
22 Feb 2010 12:47

I've got to say 7de Laan absolutely deserved that award....

And heheheh... whats with the presenters explaining everything in those speeches written to explain what cinematography is, what a lighting director does and whatnot.. tjo!

baby e
22 Feb 2010 12:53

Someone please give me the name of the HOST

@ Blue roze, you mean tehe guy in the blackish suit with the red warmer. whose speech was something like
' my mother is going to kill me if i dont mention her name and thank her. guys we leave our homes at 4am and we are back and 8pm and hardly see our families'??????
i liked him.

carino
22 Feb 2010 12:56

shem, Stone actually made me laugh coz he was reading that thing exactly the same way he does RC - forgetting cues and chewing the gum to boost his confidence… Shem….

mckoy
22 Feb 2010 14:04

the laan best soapie??? Am still to digest that. yhooo!! And dineo best actres?? I mean she hasn't been doing of late except sitting around at the shebeen.

carino
22 Feb 2010 14:19

@mckoy

Akere these awards were for shows that happened in 2008... so clearly Dineo was judged on her performance back then.. gaaaawwwd! i dont even remember what was happening on Gen then.

baby e
22 Feb 2010 14:54

@ Carino thats the problem we are now unable to relate to the awards because 99 percent of the shows ke tsa langane,  i remember how we were all so crazy about The Rain Queen (i forgot the name), Ugugu and Andile and A place called home but now there are new productions like home affairs and society.

carino
22 Feb 2010 15:22

I was genuinely excited for the Rain Queen's win.... I thought of tha-bang and the day Pieter, the director, came to blog.... and I thought shem they did totally deserve that award...

My only problem is that im not sure exactly what winning this award means for the winner.... What role do they play in the industry, or what role are they supposed to play? I just need NFVF to answer me that....

Vesa
22 Feb 2010 15:27

@ baby e.....he is John Vlismas. He is a comedian

23 Feb 2010 13:01

Is 7de Laan a soapie or comedy? I mean the way ekutujwa ngayo pha you'd swear its a comedy.
I was quite disappointed that Shoki didnt win for her role in Death of a Queen, Linda Sokhulu won instead and shes also good but I thought Linda was playing a supporting role in Sokhulu & Partners and yet she walked off with Best Lead Actress (??)

Aihcner
23 Feb 2010 13:22

Maybe you guys should look at who are the bosses of the SABC. I am quite surprised that Afrikaans / White shows were even nominated and I am so happy that some of them won!

1.  Dis Hoe Dit Is ....... Steve Hofmeyr - he is the greatest and together with Clive Morris Productions, who also won the award for the Afrikaans program 50/50, they make a great team.
2.  7de Laan - I personally think it is a great soapie - maybe not the best, but great anyway!
3.  Noot vir Noot - the longest running and best music family show ever. All the other game show concepts are copied from overseas games.

As for the poor attendance - it is just so typical!!!!

I am proud to be white, afrikaans and a South African!

CandyKane
23 Feb 2010 17:00

7de Laan sucks!!! How on earth did it win Best Soapie??
