As I
mentioned while I was there - I spent two days on location with
Popstars last week, who were filming at Zimbali Lodge in Durbs.
The semi-finalist contestants (who'll be revealed soon) were involved in a week of rigorous workshops with the judges. Each day a group got eliminated in a showdown to find the Top 10 so the who's who at the workshop is secret for now natch.
In between scrutinising them I spent my time looking out of my Zimdow (Zimbali window) ...
... dreaming of Kevin ...
I've had a crush on him from the first moment I spotted his black nail polish deliberating with the judges on the show and decided that being on location was the perfect time to get to "know" him better. I don't know what it is but I find black nail polish on dudes unbelievably
hott.
I'm pleased to report back that the task has been owned. He's now officially Kev' to us.
I spent an afternoon chatting to him. I didn't speak much - was too busy adjusting my hair and going: "hahaha" at everything he said to think properly. Here's what I remember:
His surname's Mdubeki and EMI's repesentative on the show - responsible for working on the winning group's first release single and album.
He's on the judging panel with the judges to give his input on the contestants as he'll be working closely with them once they've won.
He used to be label manager at EMI - in charge of specific labels under the EMI umbrella. I didn't realise this before but labels like Virgin are with EMI. Now he's in charge of EMI compilations. He comes up with ideas for compilation albums and then makes them happen, chooses the tracks and so on.
He's compiled the Popstars compilation album that's been released with the show.
He grew up in Durban and was a keen surfer, which is when his love for music first started. Him and his surfer buddies were hooked on waves and heavy metal band Judas Priest.
He's still a metal junkie but also addicted to every other musical genre including hip hop, classical and everything in between. There is no music that he doesn't like.
His rucksack's an Ipod - he carries it with him wherever he goes ...
He
always wears black nail polish 'cos he thinks it's cool. He has for many years. When he first started he found it difficult to find - you may remember people used to think that black nail polish was only worn by Satanists and you couldn't find it. Now even Maybelline makes it (I think?).
And, of course, I had to ask
the essential question: is it on his toes? The answer: yes
. I was thrilled by the news - and the proof - I asked him to show me, which he did. It's defs true.
Then he had to dash to start filming, but first, I insisted that we have a photo - as an excuse to get close obviously - I was wearing fancy polish too, and really wanted to impress him ...
Sigh
