On Sunday night (31 August) Jozi dance crew the Stunners grabbed the title of Mzansi's Best Dance Crew in e.tv's reality search
Step Up Or Step Out.
The finale wrapped the season with a showdown between three finalist crews: the Stunners, Immortal Style from Cape Town and Chakalaka, also from Jozi.
Stunners are Thabang Leshoro, Adolph Bohopa, Mojalefa Mbele, Sphamandla Qwabe and Thulani Mngomezulu. They specialise in Sbhujwa, a dance form that originated in Soweto.
Chakalaka feat. Hiengiwe Makhoba, Denise Bosman, Celimpilo Mnyeni, Mbali Xulu and Thando Mweli. Their speciality: Ghetto Funk.
Immortal Style feat.Alfred Burgess, Leroy Hanse, Yaheesh Campher, Daniel van Wyk, Emile Jooste. Their speciality: Breakdancing.
The three crews began their battle with a celebrity inspired dance-off that resulted in Chakalaka being eliminated.
The all-girl crew were first to be voted out for two reasons: their mentor
Arthur Mafokate wasn't impressed that they'd copied muso Chomee's moves for their performance.
Also, as the only finalist girls they very probably faced the dilemma many girls face on reality shows: girls voting.
While it's impossible to say whether girls or guys were in the majority when it came to votes, the trend in reality shows often shows that girls vote more than guys and are therefore much more likely to cast their vote for guys. Particularly when they flash body'licious, which the Stunners did in their first routine.
They changed from naked arm-muscle in their first routine to suit jackets for their second dance-off against Immortal Style and won the title in the final audience votes. Their prize includes R50 000 cash, Go-Moto scooters and a headline dance spot on an upcoming Black Coffee video.
Here are vids of their performances: the first is their celebrity inspired routine (inspired by Lady Gaga) and the second is in their own style ...
What's your take on them? Did the best crew win?
