Episode 9 – What Kate didWhat Kate did actually left me feeling a bit let-down. Now, how morbid does that sound? It’s like a murder is not good enough for her…what was I expecting? To tell the truth, even though Kate is the character I dislike the most, I always found her back story the most intriguing.I suppose blowing up the house in which her drunk step father (who turns out to be her biological father), and then going on the run just didn’t cut it. I honestly feel a bit let down. What saved it from being a total let down is the re-introduction of Slimy Marshall-Man (Marshall Edward Mars). That guy gives me the creeps.
I guess I just find it just a tad unbelievable that slimy Marshal-Man would go all the way to Australia, tracking her down to take her back to the States. He could be more than a bit obsessed with her..maybe she’s more than a job to him?? That would explain that. But what would explain Kate’s mother’s fear of her?? Ok, Kate did murder her husband, but I’m sure that she would have realized that Kate would not harm her?? Or maybe she does think that, considering that it was the mother that ratted Kate out. No, I think I will take this info in with a pinch of salt. Lost has thought me that everything is not exactly as it seems.Something else that was a bit of a let down was Shannon’s funeral. Sayid’s heartbroken state did bring about the sniffles, but here again, I was expecting more. Shannon was not the most popular person on the island (neither was Boone) but it just seemed like it was “Ok, here is the funeral….” And then it’s over. I suppose that could be the difference between asking to leave the show, and waking up one morning only to be told “oh, hey…guess whose character we’re killing off today”.
Far from being a total let down, the following moments are worthy of mention. The first being Sawyer strangling Kate. Guess who I was rooting for?? Yes, one point for you if you said Sawyer! Sawyer, being in a fever, was a bit delirious, asked kept asking Jack “where is she?”. Although it’s never confirmed who “she” is, Jack assumes he means Kate, and is stunned when Sawyer whispers “I love her”Kate, meanwhile, was collecting fruit for Sawyer, and she sees a magnificent black horse in the jungle. While Shannon’s funeral is going on, Ana-Lucia opts to stay on the beach and Kate opts to stay with Sawyer. Kate confides in the sleeping Sawyer that she thinks that she saw a horse outside. Suddenly Sawyer wakes up and grabs her around the throat “Why did you kill me?” he asks her.
Another moment worthy of mention is the kiss between Jack and Kate. After the funeral Jack gets back to the hatch, along with Locke. The siren’s going and Kate’s nowhere to be found. Locke frantically enters the code and Jack finds Sawyer on the floor. He goes looking for Kate, and finds her in the jungle. At this point Kate is more than likely suffering from lack of sleep – having spent the last 24 hours or so at Sawyer’s side. Her emotions are running high and as Jack confronts her, she eventually kisses him when he hugs her. She seems shocked and mortified at her actions and runs into the jungle.
Sawyer waking up was one of the highlights of the show for me. In case you didn’t know, I have a soft spot for the man. Kate returns to Saywer’s side, a bit reluctantly. She speaks to Sawyer first asking for him and then saying “Wayne” (her step-father/father). Sawyer stirs when she does this.I don’t know whether she thought that perhaps Wayne was possessing Sawyer or what (hey, weirder things have happened on this show), but she proceeds to explain why she killed him (Wayne). She says that she could not bear to know that the man she hated so much was a part of her. She also confides that whenever she looks as Sawyer and allows herself to feel anything for him she sees Wayne. At that point Sawyer wakes up. It’s obvious that he’s heard the entire thing, but still being groggy, doesn’t push it. Kate is embarrassed but really happy to see him awake. He assumes that they’ve been rescued when he sees himself in a bunk bed. Kate helps him outside, where they both the black horse again. She approaches it and it allows her to pet it, and the horse turns and goes back into the jungle.
I’m not exactly sure what the significance of the black horse is. She’s seen it before, when she got away from slimy Marshall-Man, and then earlier in the jungle. Anybody got any ideas?Mr Eko continues to be a delight and I love his very cool way. He’s a man who marches to his own beat. Michael questions Locke about the hatch, and more specifically the blast door (which no-one had noticed before). Locke tells him about the video. Mr Eko also wishes to watch. After watching the movie, Michael wonders about the missing pieces, but Mr Eko coolly walks out.Later, he comes back and speaks to Locke. He tells him the story of Josiah and how Josiah found a rare book (the First Testament). He gives Locke a bible that they had found in the other hatch. Locke opens it to find it hollowed out, and in it is the missing reel. Locke seems to be in awe at the odds of finding the missing pieces but Eko advises him not to confuse co-incidence for fate. They re-attach the missing reel, and it reveals that the computer should not be used for anything other than entering the code. Using it for anything other that the code could result in another “incident”.
Meanwhile, Michael is busy poking around the computer and surrounding equipment. He hears a strange beep and I start thinking “Oh Michael, what have you done?” Seems he shared the same thought as he looks around for the source of the beeping. He sees that there is still 51 minutes left for the codeHe notices that the cursor on the screen has moved down a notch, under the words “Hello”.Herewith follows the conversation.“Hello”“Hello”“Who is this?”“This is Michael. Who is this?”“Dad?”The show ends with a stunned Michael mouthing the words “Walt”
Argghhhhh. So many questions! If it is indeed Walt at the other end, where exactly is he? And how did Michael manage to use the keyboard when Locke demonstrated earlier that it seemed to be locked until the moment they need to enter the code.I read a quote somewhere that said about this show “Just when you think you have the answers, they change the questions”. It’s driving me nuts and I am so tempted to just go read up on the show. So far, I’ve managed to steer clear of info, but I don’t know how much longer I can hold out.
