A couple of nights ago I choked while sipping my wine when I saw the awful new Handy Andy advert that's doing the rounds on TV. I don't know how new it is but it was first time I've seen it and I was shocked at how crap it is.
In case you haven't seen it, it's an animated fairy tale theme about a Prince Charming who's struggling to clean a castle and a knight in armour who's a chick who steps in to clean things with Handy Andy. It ends with a Stepford Wife in the kitchen, programmed to clean and wipe.
Of course they don't say that she's programmed but it's the impression it conveys which is enhanced by the condescending fairy tale build-up.
When I first saw the ad I thought it was aiming at advertising to children - not that they would like it either because it has no animated smarts or pizzazz to it. It's so irrelevant and tacky it's very difficult to work out what it's supposed to mean.
I've been thinking about it for days and the only explanation I can come up with is that the ad's saying that girls who love fairy tales and princes must grow up to love Handy Andy when they dutifully find their place in the kitchen i.e. it's sexist!!
What else could it mean?! I've watched it twice and refuse to watch again - when it comes on I change channels or fast forward so maybe I'm missing something. Or
not. If you have a different explanation please spill.
Do you agree it's the worst ad on TV at the moment or is there something else that's torturing you more?
