DStv Channel Shuffle Details

Yesterday DStv announced that they're introducing changes to their channels so I thought I'd share them with you step-by-step to put you in the picture as to exactly what's going to be happening over the next two months.

Channel Shuffle

Basically the setup is that at approximately 02h00 on 1 October DStv's going to be reshuffling all their channels.

Each channel's going to move to being on a three digit number instead of on one or two digit numbers as most of them currently are.

This means all channels will start from channel 100 eg. M-Net (currently on Channel 3) will change to being on channel 101.

There are two main reasons for the changes happening:

1. The number of channels on DStv has grown from 13 to over 70 since they first launched twelve years ago and they've been added without grouping them in any particular order.

By reshuffling them they want to organise them more specifically according to interest and genre so that things flow from one channel to the next more smoothly as you browse across them all. The genres are going to divided in the following way:

- general entertainment (starting with M-Net on 101)
- movies
- lifestyle and culture
- sport
- documentaries
- news and commerce
- kids
- music
- religion
- consumer channels

2. They want to space things out so they have room to add new channels in the right genres.

Getting info on the changing channels:

To keep updated on what's doing down and see which channels are where you'll be able to get all the info you need from these various places:

- The October issue of Dish is going to have an explanation of things and will include a listing of all the new channel numbers. There's going to be a special pull-off-and-keep cover for next to your TV to see which channels are where.

- The info will be available on DStv's website as from 10 September and from 20 September Channel 199 will have the info too.

- You can get e-mail updates on the info by Sms'ing your e-mail adress to: 32444.

- You can phone up your local Multichoice and ask questions.

Important things you'll want to know right now:

1. Apparently the whole thing's going to be a seamless process that shouldn't involve any interruptions. Your decoder will download the changes at 02h00 on 2 October and will guide you through what you need to do as it always does.

2. The changes apply to the audio and radio channels to so they'll change their numbers as well.

3. If you have a PVR and you've recorded programmes before the 2nd October but haven't watched them yet, they'll still be there as they were once the changes take effect so need to worry that you'll lose anything.

4. That thing your decoder does when you try to punch in three numbers and struggle - when it jumps to a one or two digit number before you've had time to punch in three - this won't happen anymore.

I've always thought it was just my remote that did it and was pleased when I discovered that it's actually part of the software programming. This is going to be re-programmed when the three digits come in so that you have time to punch them in.

New Channels Coming Soon

Five new channels are going to be introduced at the beginning of November. These are them:

1. Sony Entertainment Television

This is similar to M-Net in that it's a variety mix of movies, shows etc. I'm confused about it though because the are four or five different SET channels that cater to different regions like India and Asia so I'm not sure which we're getting exactly. I'll find out more info and get back to you.

2. Animax

A 24-hour Anime channel that runs all sorts of anime shows 24/7. The age range it caters for is 15 to 29 - from the sounds of it it's a Manga fans heaven.

3.  Movie Stars

An extra movie channel featuring movies that have already been on across all the movie channels in the past.

4. One Gospel

A religious musical channel featuring 90% local gospel music.

5. An as yet unconfirmed lifestyle channel. I imagine it'll be a decor, fashion, home or food type channel. As soon news about this is confirmed you'll find it on TVSA.

So, that's it - the most important things you need to know to make sure you don't have a TV nerve-out when you see things starting to change.

PS: In February they'll be adding more new channels from the BBC specifically. BBC's going to be changing BBC Prime so that it caters to specific areas i.e. scheduled more according to SA times and lifestyles and there'll be more BBC channels added, including a bit of local programming in them. From the sounds of it BBC's setting up an office In SA so they can be more in tune with things.

Good for the Anime fans, but as SciFi was canned because it was "uneconomically viable", I fail to see how a Sci-Fi genre like Anime channel can be?!?

Tashi,

Did you know that the Home Channel is going 7 days a week from 15 Oct?
So i am assuming that the lifestyle channel is not the same?
Regarding Trace, Merlin the Editor on Dstv's forum said there were issues with licencing/content or something like that.
So hopefully they are still working on it, as the NO ADS alone was the best thing... all the music channels play is the same churned music!

Funkymunky,
Maybe DSTV wants to advertise on the trace channel and they are having none of that. I liked that channel mainly because ther were no adverts. As for channel O I have stopped long time ago watching that channel.

Could defs be funkymunky - we don't have one yet and now that you mention it I'm sure heard rumblings about it somewhere a couple of months ago.

realist - re Trace, it's as funky says - they're not planning on picking it up again, gonna find out more about exactly why.

Kromoz re the sci-fi channel, I asked about this - fully witchya that it sucks that we don't have it anymore  - the situation with it is that they're wanting to structure ActionX so that the Sci'fi's more structured together in Sci-Fi blocks.

I reckon they're going to have to look at getting the channel back in the next couple of years 'cos of how Sci'fi's getting better and better than regular shows. I think one of the things when it comes to getting channels like this is that if they do it they don't have stuff to put on channels like ActionX.

Like HBO for instance - I asked about this too and they say the reason they don't have it is 'cos they've already got some of their shows on M-Net, Go etc eg Rome so if they get the full channel those shows have already been on. It would still be great to have it so we could all th other stuff.

Another factor that decides what channels they get i whether or not there's a European feed of it. I've always wondered why we see MTV Europe for instance instead of the US and apparently there are two main factors - the first is that satellite wise the way they're positioned means that a US feed has to do two or three satellite hops to get to us which is very intensive on resources whereas the European satellites are one hop.

The second reason is that they need to get all sorts of permissions from various players in the US to broadcast out of the US so it might not even happen if not everyone agrees whereas if they use the European braodacsts all that stuff's sorted and there aren't the same issues.

That's basically how I understood the reasoning.

Regards the new channel numbers : check out this thread on the forum that has the listing of what's gonna be where: DStv Channel Shuffle.

Here are some posts on the new channels. Looks like Animax is actually owned by Sony.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-08-25/sony-brings-anime-channel-to-africa

Starting later this year, the DStv satellite service in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe will begin carrying Sony Pictures Television International's Animax channel. Currently, over 40 million homes in 42 different Asian, European, and South American countires have access to it. Some of the shows that are now being broadcast on Animax in various countries include Blood+, Fullmetal Alchemist, and The Prince of Tennis.

LONDON, August 23: Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) will launch two new channels in Africa later this year on MultiChoice’s digital pay-TV satellite platform: the general family entertainment channel Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and the anime channel Animax.

SET and Animax will be available on MultiChoice to DStv subscribers for the first time in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. In a separate agreement with MultiChoice, the Portugal feed of AXN has been extended to Portuguese-speaking territories Angola and Mozambique in Africa.

The family entertainment channel SET, available in 54 million households in 34 countries, is targeted at the 16-to-49 group. The anime channel Animax, available in Asia, Latin America and more recently in Europe, airs 24 hours a day in 40 million homes across 42 countries and in 14 languages. The channel is primarily targeted at 15-to 29-year-olds. AXN is a general entertainment channel reaching over 100 million households in 16 languages in 50 countries.

Theres already a SET on the Indian Bouquet.  So i dont think they'll repeat the same thing, so it must be a different one, and i dont see DSTV bringing that into the mainstream bouquet.

The anime channel sounds good.  Never had access to much anime except for the old Sci-Fi channel...
