Please leave me and my weaves alone...

shoooI am not usually one for writing, but I just had to vent. I was in a taxi this morning, minding my own business, well I was actually admiring my well manicured nails, and playing with my FAKE hair.
Two ladies and some guy sitting right at the backseat talking about me(yes me)_gaaad they weren’t even ashamed!
The conversation was like…<<sies black women! look at her, fake nails(my nails are so real guys it hurts), fake hair (my extentions), black suit, high heel shoes, laptop bag, blah blah blah but she is still riding on a taxi (Oooops...that really hurt, but then again why was she in a taxi)>>. The other one went like_<<look at her, she probably spends all her money on clothing_the guy said, <<there’s nothing I hate more than a woman who is embarrassed by her culture. (My Gaaaaaad...me embarassed?? i'm pedi and too proud LOL) Why won’t these women shave their hair, or just relax it, or plait it, or maybe leave it Afro, or dreadlocks?? >>Shoooo Batho ba batsho!!!
I dont like dreads on me(me love me some dreadlocked guy)...must i be victimised? Must i be subject to this kind of prejudice simply because i don't like afro??? hell no!
I slowly turned my head towards their direction and I made them aware that I can hear them, and by that time I was starting to get seriously annoyed. Unfortunately, the minute I got gatvol, jst when I was about to say something_it was the time for me to do the “shot left”, damn!
I refuse to be called fake because I decided to look pretty. I love my weave, and I love my hair extension and u know whay, I aint taking it off just because u say it makes me look unafrican. What’s unafrican? I wear a weave to look good, and I aint trying to be nobody. I aint trying to be white. All i want is to be beautiful!
The Tyra Banks, the Gabrielle Union, the who's who wear all kinds of weaves_and it certainly doensnt take away their
blackness!!
  beauty of moriri
How can I forget the late Lebo with her wild hair drama. She was ever looking glamorous with her Red, White, Black, Purple hair! She still kept it real! ever so stylish
I will have my rope thick plaits because I feel comfortable with it, not because it makes me look African. I am so African and i don't need to prove myself to anybody!
straight-back bathong
I will wear my make-up(not that even i know how to apply it) and conceal all that has to be concealed, not because I want to be a model, but simply because I can, and I owe it to myself to look good...at all times.
I will do my manicures and pedicures...because i can afford it.
I will wear my leggings, to conceal my silver stripes(hi hi hi)...they can box me if they can!!!
In actual fact, this goes to prove a point that blaq women are very open minded, so capable of acclamatizing to anything. We can go all wild and still keep it real!
Have u ever seen an Indian wearing a zulu outfit to a function? How many times have u seen blaq women wearing surreys(spell check please) to the weddings? Thank u.
Would that mean they want to be Indian? Of course not. They are just fabulous...It's not our fault God made us fabulous!

Qick survey
1. What makes us, us?
2. Must we always have to put on our traditional outfits to prove our love for our cultures?
3. This month is declared as a heritage month, what are yalls doing about it?

So, please leave me and my weaves alone!

Personally, I dont like weaves, never wore one. But I relax my own hair, so it can be manageable and easy to manage.

I really like REAL hair, whether its worn as an Afro, or plaited, or relaxed. Some people think my own hair is a weave, and I view that as a diss actually, but whatever...

I really dont like the idea of buying hair (especially HUMAN hair), and attaching it on one's head. Who's hair IS that?

Imma, we could argue why people are in taxis when they should be wearing amabheshu riding an elephant or whatever animal.

That's just a symptom of people that don't embrace change and they'll say whatever they want to so they feel better about their push back.

We could take this argument as far as saying relaxed hair is not natural black hair cause we know black hair isn't that straight....

What makes you you is what you are all alone in your room when all the make up's off your face, the high heels have been shaken off your legs and you're looking back at yourself with pride. Heritage month means zilch to me, just like women's month, youth month, secretaries month..just names nje.

I've done every hair do (dreds, afro, relax, braids) and i must say that a weave is my favourite. I have a weave so often that white people actually think its my real hair.

Yes it hurts when i have to pay R700 but hey, I look good,

I never really put much thought into who owned the hair to begin with. But now that u guys mention it, I really don't think I care, cos whatever I buy with my money, belongs to me, so now the hair becomes mine.

MamaOmpha
12 Sep 2007 06:02

Nami Im not really a weave person because naturally I have long "relaxed" hair.  but to say that someone is not embracing their culture by wearing a weave is wrong.  We are all different  and we are not blessed with the same hair texture or length.  So if som1 who does not have long hair feels she needs to have a weave let her.  Imagine if all of us were rocking i "kaffirhare" just for the sake of embracing our culture. Noh man

Whats up with the PHD - (Pull Her Down) Syndrome?  I personally believe that we must not judge a person by the way they choose to stlyle their hair.  I've never had a weave and I don't have any bad impressions about it.  My hair is naturally long even though I am 100% black, but I also know that not evryone has long hair and since we live in times where there are beautiful weaves for women, there is nothing wrong with waering a weave.  The other thing is that the texture of ur hair does not make who u are inside, u can be the most natural looking person outside, but inside u could be be different.  Times allow us to expore different things, but that does not mean that we are neglecting our cultures.  I say be who u want to be and style ur hair whichever way u choose, be it natural or weaved at the end of the day u can't live to satisfy another person it's all about u and ur happiness and if it's what u want then go for it and remember people will always talk, so just life.

The lyrics:

Little girl with the press and curl
Age eight I got a Jheri curl
Thirteen I got a relaxer
I was a source of so much laughter
At fifteen when it all broke off
Eighteen and went all natural
February two thousand and two
I went and did
What I had to do
Because it was time to change my life
To become the women that I am inside
Ninety-seven dreadlock all gone
I looked in the mirror
For the first time and saw that HEY....

[Chorus]
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations no no
I am not my hair
I ma not this skin
I am a soul that lives within

[Talking:]
What'd she do to her hair? I don't know it look crazy
I like it. I might do that.
Umm I wouldn't go that far. I know .. ha ha ha ha

[Verse 2]
Good hair means curls and waves
Bad hair means you look like a slave
At the turn of the century
Its time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off
Like a South African beauty
Or get in on lock
Like Bob Marley
You can rock it straight
Like Oprah Winfrey
If its not what's on your head
Its what's underneath and say HEY....

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
(Whoa, whoa, whoa)
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better person?
(Whoa, whoa, whoa)
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better friend? Oooh
(Whoa, whoa, whoa)
Does the way I wear my hair determine my integrity?
(Whoa, whoa, whoa)
I am expressing my creativity..
(Whoa, whoa, whoa)

[Verse 3]
Breast Cancer and Chemotherapy
Took away her crown and glory
She promised God if she was to survive
She would enjoy everyday of her life ooh
On national television
Her diamond eyes are sparkling
Bald headed like a full moon shining
Singing out to the whole wide world like HEY...

[Chorus 2x]

[Ad lib]
If I wanna shave it close
Or if I wanna rock locks
That don't take a bit away
From the soul that I got
Dat da da dat da [4x]
If I wanna where it braided
All down my back
I don't see what wrong with that
Dat da da dat da [4x]

[Talking:]
Is that India.Arie?
Ooh look she cut her hair!
I like that, its kinda PHAT
I don't know if I could do it.
But it looks sharp, it looks nice on her
She got a nice shaped head
She got an apple head
I know right?
It's perfect.

a much as there's nothin wrong with beutifyin y'all's already pretty-selves, sungtimes the weave thing goes too far...
its can be way too long (and usually the beutiful the expensive ones -that you start feeling sorry for some pony that had to die for that weave..

it can be so messy that the wearer looks like a pros/ho that does her business in the bush  -
It can be so obvious-ussualy shiny or too curly or bushy that the wearer screams artificiall
it can be so different from the weares hair espesh when not planted correctly and the wearer has different  hair-color from it that it gives her a cheap look or says I'm trying too hard to work it.....

and sumtimes girls dont know what to do with them weaves they end up tying them in ponytails, which ends up showing their real hair, or they make this huge ball on the back of their head that you feel sory for her  for all that extra weight

It can get all over the place during the shenaynay that you wants to yank it of her head..but you start thinking oh it could be painful pullling ones hair...but you remeber its not real but still you dont yank it off cause you remeber you paid for it...so you just deal with it...LOL

I blame that on media (my opinion). What we c on TV is misleading us blaq sistas. Kante this thing with weaves, don't 1 have to look at the shape of her face first? Caz clearly u can't wear eg Queen's weave on a rectangular shaped face, but nna iv sin it ol....

I saw Ntombi (Gen) and her beautiful weave and i relaxed my natural hair just to have that look.  It was 100% and people thought it was my real hair.  After i took it out i cut my hair do grow it naturaaly again.  Weaves are not problem i guess but the fakeness does not have to be too obvious.

mna i blv that black people have a problem at times, they dont want to embrace change and they want others to c the world the way they do. people do anything as long as it makes u happy and u r comfortable, dont worry urself abt what pple wil say cz people wil always find somthing to say abt u. so be comfortable in ur own skin, ur own values and principles and most importantly be comfortable in the way u c the world.

@Presha, Hooking up the weave just enhance the prettiness. It  does not make you look pretty. There is nothing worse than a non-pretty chikita hooked up a waeve-it is... not so great.

Or do u just want 2 do the "agh my hare"? KWA KWA KWA!

I just love woman who take care of themselves. Be it manicure( not too much of the coat/glue) and the weave as long as you don't keep too long and looks kruuse!

I don't think that we should be stuck in one world where there are so many world to explore. If we were that traditional, we would be walking around naked like aur for-fathers. The world is changing and so do people.

Hi everybody!!!!!!!!!
Very interesting topic, thanks Immaculate.
I also rock a weave and I must say its the greatest thing to ever happen 2 my hair. I used to "rock" an afro and it became but it was getting too much for me as I was joining the working force and needed a low maintance hairstyle, I went to the salon to blow my fro out so it was easier to comb, but those fools relaxed my hair!

I stayed for about a year with my relaxed hair and I must say the daily combing did not do anything for my chemically shocked hair, so I had to resort to plaits and braids and then thought y not try the weave, its gr8, it looks gr8 on me, easy to maintain AND I can afford it, so I dont see what the problem is.
A weave is a fashion statement NOT a cultural defiance.

B.T.W, how do I get a GOLD STAR

hey there imma,i think its all a personal choice really- i use to relax my hair and have it long like that but have recently decided to go natural and will be doing dreds soon.i had a weave that saved me on those bad hair days when i needed to go to saloon but was broke.at the end it s how u feel ka the hairstyle u have.wearing a weave, putting onmake up and dressing a certain way should be a personal choice as long as u are comfortable.about being african- those who preach africanism should wear amabeshu and other traditional gears all the time - just to show how african they are.  choose your own style, be comfortable and ignore the silly the comments.

but really, human beings are just hypocrites..they say something today just because it suits them, then they go do the very same thing they were opposing just because it suits them again.I personally have a problem with some horrible weaves but for me to just pull someone down when they are trying their best to look beautiful I find it quite unacceptable.I jave a problem with someone who don't make an effort to beautify themselves, even if you can go for plastic surgery, breast enhancing surgery what's wrong with that.We as men we will tell our women not to wear miniskirts, tight jeans, sexy outfits etc yet we go chase those we run into in the streets dressed exactly how we discourage our women to dress like,is that not plain hypocritical?Come on people, there are women who are not blessed with long hair and they believe that long hair will look great on them so what should they do,just accept that God didn't bless them with that and settle for it,hell no...ladies we want beautiful ladies, make up or not, weaves or not, high heels or not...I want my woman to make an effort to look good, beautiful, attractvive and sexy...the more she looks great the more I feel great....I mma babes keep rocking those manicures and them weaves...we love them babes.....

I dont see any problem with people buying hair, in 1994 we were liberated and free to do whatever we please as long as it doesnt compromise the struggle that our fore-fathers died for. People are arguing that weave its horse's hair, when you take a horse's tail and put it on ur head I say Viva to you, coz u are repossessing what was taken away from the africans by the english by the timeof unongqawuse.of course we cant take back the tail to the horse so what ever we do with it its up to us, what angers me its the fact that we have to pay for what is originally ours. We have beaten, endured and suffered the odds to be where we are today, the money that we earn took years of sacrifice, hunger and toturing. i say lets spend it the best way we wanna. If fake hair, fake nails and whatever its what we want, then be it. Those big mammas in shops and taxis are just jealous coz they were born before the liberation time and they cant enjoy freely the fruits of freedom. Nice article by the, from every angle u look at it

People think they have a right to say black people sell their culture to other races, while they are the ones always snoopping around to see how we live. Since Nongqawse they were snoopping and saw our cattle, they became greedy and stole them. Then nowadays u see sangoma's of many colours. To them breast used to be sacred but watch their movies now, I say lets wear those weaves like never before. people like limiting us while they do as they please.

Answer:

1. Our fabulousness...african curves, beaty you name it....And the skill (I'ld call it an art) we have to enhance it all, make it look that much better.

And why do people say weave is not your own hair....Damn you paid a good amount of money for it... Do you say the clothes you wear everyday are fake....cause we all know how God created us - and there sure was no pink shirt and black skirt involved (so why not fight for sticking with natural beauty in that regard)... Do you say your bed, your car your house everything you paid to have is fake..... So yah people have double standards...
If I paid cash to have my weave on, its mine darling - its my hair...I paid a loooot of money to have it.

2. My love if we had to put on traditional outfits, it would be TROUBLE...I know for a fact that back in the days girls (well xhosa girls) used to wear inkciyo (which is basically a little leather strap that covers usisi qha....It was not all these african insipired outfits - all those came with civilisation (stoned cherries) and design...So imagine looonudity nje...Mara bebengazukuhleba nokuhleba, they'll just look for a blanket to cover you up.

Immaculate congradulations on loving the things you do and how YOU WANT TO LOOK! Its nobody's business..........

Hence; one wonders......and cant help to wonder!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was sheened;step-oned;revloned etc since i 3 or for yeard old!...........had braids till 2003 i was forever on weaves etc and occational tinted short hair.......

2003.........i experience things in my career.......studies a few memors.....got closer to God......and somehow (i dont know if the mentioned things had anything to do with it)...i refused to put hair straighteners on my hair/head...i felt so strong about it but it did not make me put others off them..........

2011 Sept.............deciding to throw away my weaves etc.....just before I read an article on a late Destiny mag; and realised where this 100% hair come from.......I am growing my hair natural now.........and i think there are so many beautiful hairstyles one can do with natural hair......

U see ......the thing is.......I work in an industry that still need to get to 1994......and when they compliment me on my 100% bonding (how that hair looks better than that)......i cringe........because i read a lot into their minds............i have come to understand a lot of things........in a relaxed enviroment........reason why i think i will be somehow pushed to politics...................small things like that...............makes ppl treat us differently....

Same as a cccringe when I hear an outstanding African leader; calling us black!.......why should we accept to be defined by other people....i am teaching my kids.......about God ;themselves; & the world..........
