Metro FM's
Adil More became the third celebrity to be booted out of the SABC2 reality dance competition
Strictly Come Dancing 5 last night (30 October 2008).
Adil's elimination means that his dance partner (and rumoured love interest)
Robynn Soules will be heading back to Cape Town.
Adil and Robynn came head-to-head in the dance-off with
Gugu Zulu and his dance partner
Sarah Cooper. Despite the fact that Adil and Robynn were not the only couple that scored lowest with the judges, viewer votes saved 5FM's
Anele Mdoda and
Brandon Eilers Le Riche, and
Garth Collins and
Hayley Bennett, from the dreaded dance-off.
Viewers' votes account for 50% of the final scores. As per usual, when judges' scores and viewer votes were tallied, the two couples with the lowest combined scores had to perform their routines again during a dance-off.
After the dance-off, the judges' final votes for which couple they wanted to keep in the competition were:
Tyrone Watkins: Gugu Zulu (“for going into overdrive”)
Salome Sechele: Adil More (“for delivering a technically more sound performance”)
Dave Campbell: Gugu Zulu (“for his determination”)
Head judge
Lillian Phororo also vouched for Gugu, immediately booting Adil out of the competition and back to Metro FM.
The judges' scores (before viewer votes were added) were as follows:
Tessa van Duuren & Grant Esterhuizen: 30
Hlubi Mboya & Khutso Khunou: 29
Cindy Nell & Johnathan Broadway: 29
Rob van Vuuren & Mary Martin: 28
Gugu Zulu & Sarah Cooper: 28
Garth Collins & Hayley Bennett: 27
Adil More & Robynn Soules: 23
Anele Mdoda & Brandon Eilers Le Riche: 23
It was a night for murderous passion versus grace and elegance, with couples having to perform either the Paso Doble or the Foxtrot.
In the Paso the male dancer becomes the matador, the enticing epitome of machismo... he is strong, his hips are never in line with his shoulders and his whole body is constantly in strong C-shapes. The female dancer is vivacious and sexy. She is the cape; the flower and “Antonio Banderas'” shadow.
The Foxtrot, however, is an elegant show of graceful, lilting rises and falls. Dancers perform with “soft” knees to facilitate the smooth, flowing moves.
The first to attempt this graceful style was muscle man and former Gladiator, Garth Collins, with a well-rehearsed routine detailed with kicks, jumps and feathers flying off partner Haylee Benett's glittering costume.
Judges were clearly impressed with his improved confidence, and Lillian joked that the “Tower of Power” had become the “Gentle Giant”. Dave Campbell found the performance delicate, especially seeing that a big guy could seem so light on his feet.
Hlubi Mboya and
Khutso Khunou were up next, with an inspired shot at the Paso Doble. Dressed in a fiery orange and red gown, the petite actress was dramatically thrown around with skirt flying – ideal moves to “become” the cape she is supposed to embody.
Salome reminded her that the female dancer is supposed to use her arms to frame her man in this style. Tyrone applauded the beautiful body shapes, but was annoyed by Hlubi's mouth that he thought was open too much.
After a week during which she took serious strain, consistent performer
Tessa van Duuren and partner
Grant Esterhuizen received the night's highest score, gracing the floor in a silver gown reminiscent of a bygone, elegant era.
Dave liked the strength underlining her grace and beauty, and Lilian – despite noticing various foot faults – loved the way she floated across the dance floor.
The show's “soap opera couple” Robynn Soules and Adil More got a lukewarm response, and their lowest score of the series.
Tyrone thought the bull in this instance was turned to minced meat and Salome was disappointed that he failed to express the agression, vigour and attitude that the Paso requires.
The judges' blue-eyed boy,
Rob van Vuuren, found himself in unfamiliar territory, with this being the first week he was not showered with compliments.
Lilian noted that – although he “seems to be a dream guy” – he should have paid more careful attention to his topline and timing. Tyrone stepped out of character for a second and added that he still “managed to ignite the dance floor”.
The judges have failed to appreciate
Cindy Nell's charms thus far, and she expressed anger at the fact that the judges seem to be always “giving the pretty girl flack”.
However, she and dance partner
Jonathan Broadway managed to redeem themselves with a turnaround performance, just dramatic enough and still paying attention to the technical detail. Powerful music from Star Wars accompanied striking theatrical choreography.
An untimely ankle injury made the 100% commitment that 5FM's Anele Mdoda proved to this competition problematic this week. Judges agreed that her Foxtrot lacked precision timing, her topline was all wrong and that there were too many errors with the footwork.
She still managed to get a roaring response from the audience, despite the fact that everyone clearly prefers her to be the hot Latin Mama.
Gugu and Sarah's Zorro-inspired Paso Doble proved to be a winning routine for the judges. They did it with great attitude and litres of adrenaline, and despite impressing all round were warned that one can also overdance and so neglect the technical detail.
Danny K and kid wonder and violin virtuoso N-Cha were the guest performers, while the judges tallied votes.
Next expect to be entertained by couples performing either a Salsa or a Viennese Waltz.
