Montana's Anelisa Phewa
aka
Lwazi ...
After requests for news, goss and more-more about Anelisa I decided that the best way to snoop out more about him (without him properly knowing) would be to ask him out on a date.
Two days later I got tickets for the R Kelly concert in Cape Town - I'd heard from
Chantal Stanfield's column that Anelisa's a muso too so it all seemed a purrfect "excuse". I called him up, asked him out, he said yes. The result:
A scrapbook of pics and goss of what went down.
*Please imagine R Kelly's I Believe I Can Fly (for the romantic shots) mixed with your fave Kelly-high-tempo hip hop number as background music ...
Anelisa - getting out of the car as we arrived at the concert.
VITAL STATISTICS: (Think Mission Impossible type computer graphics)
Shorter than you'd imagine in moments and then taller in others.
He played Thabang in the SABC1's Diver's Down.
He was also the voice of Pax in the animated series URBO: The Adventures of Pax Africa.
He wears these shoes ...
First glance of a kiss. Neither of us had ever had Golden Circle tickets before so we posed about them - a lot. Obviously both wanting to get closer, but cautiously - the night was young!
The competition! Wherever Anelisa went there were chicks fluttering round him. Pictured with the caption: Nomtha Twala - who took the Golden Circle ticket pic - thought it was perfectly angled in relation to the R Kelly poster.
What Anelisa looks like when he's talking cell.
VITAL STATS, TAKE 2He doesn't get too many SMS's, nor too few. He was never distracted from "us" when an SMS came in.
He doesn't drink much but was very happy (and comfortable) that I wanted to booze.
He got very irritated for-and-with-me when security turned whack and took my camera away. I had a freak-out and Anelisa had one too - just to keep me company sort of thing - exactly what you need in a date.
Later he was brilliant too - when
it really mattered. Can you believe it took an hour-and-a half to get it back afterwards?? - and I was near the
front of the queue. I could rant for days and never properly describe how badly organised the camera collection setup was.
A brief explain ....
All the confiscated cameras were put into this small room but none of them were ordered - not according to number nor initial - so when you arrived to collect them the security people had to go through them ALL to find each person's name. The que must have gone for at least another three hours after I left - no kidding.
SAVED BY: FAB PHOTOGRAPHER 2TV Plus journo and
autograph collector of note Clayton Morar was at the concert too and he used his trusty cellphone-snapper to take pics for us.
Auto fact!Lookout for Clayton on this week's celebisode of
Flash! (15 June) - he's gonna be chatting about his ever-increasing autograph collection.
His most recent one: Mimi (he's a Mega fan).
Anelisa's PyschicAnelisa predicted R Kelly would perform I Believe I Can Fly and I Need A Hug - and he sang both.
Anelisa using the power of his mind to predict.
Actually, not true, it just seemed to suit the moment. This was him being cool about the camera fiasco ie. as irritated as me.
Romance!! To: R Kelly's Michael Jackson tribute.
VITAL STATS, TAKE 3Anelisa's also a muso. He plays base, lead guitar, drums and percussion. He's sung in choirs and at Uni he was in a band with
Dalene Chantal - called "Between Sessions".
It was named this 'cos they used to rehearse in between everything else. They played a couple of gigs but then work commitments and band members moving away took over.
He's recently joined a new band called "I Am." - was off for a rehearsal the next day.
What Anelisa looks like when he's having sups.
Just before - fandom in the queue at Nando's.
Not Anelisa's thankfully - would be too big for him. It wins the Most Blinging Piece spotted of the Night.

Anelisa wanting to get me sweets - of course I said "No thanks." as if I never eat them.
After-burner - Anelisa's take on the show:
"I thought he knew how to entertain the audience, he was larger than life with these huge gestures and thrusts with his hips. Very entertaining -, also he has a great stage presence, he played to everyone: the people at the front, the people at the back - he has an incredible voice - also a very good sense of humour."
Tashi: What do you think his next career move should be?
Anelisa: I think he should retire! I think he’s 40 now - he looks good and he’s taken care of himself - with that kind of money you can do anything - but he sings about only one part of his life - the 18-25 part of his life, but he’s 40 - so he’s singing about a lie.
"Everytime he says “I’m going to Do you,” you think “Dude - you’ve probably got erectile dysfunction now.” What you’re saying is not true anymore - you may keep going to these clubs but you’re going to be 60 eventually. "
"When he sings I Believe I Can Fly - there’s no age in that - that’s different. He must either retire and produce for other people or he must continue to write and grow his audience - sort of like Harry Potter did - the readers grew up with him. Whatever happens to him - I’d love to hear a song about what he’s been through - I want to hear his other stories, then you can appreciate his music for longer."
On the way back to the car.
