William Shatner - who won two Emmys and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of highly eccentric lawyer Denny Crane in
The Practice and
Boston Legal - auctioned off a kidney stone of his to help raise money for a charity home to be built in Los Angeles.
In a stunt worthy of his alter ego Crane, Shatner sold off the kidney stone to online casino GoldenPalace.com for $25,000 (R160,000) while the rest of the cast of Boston Legal raised another $20,000 for the Habitat for Humanity charity to build a home in Elysian Park.
A spokeswoman for the charity was philosophical about it.
"William Shatner presented the funds to us and, in addition to the Boston Legal funds, that made it possible for this house," said Erin Park.
"We're really appreciative. It's kind of an odd donation, but, you know what, it builds a house for a family in need."
Volunteers started building the house on Friday last week.
