The winners of the 2006 Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards were announced at a glittering ceremony held at Gallagher Estate last night, which was attended by TVSA's Johannesburg correspondent, Lelo Boyana (look out for her report, coming soon).
Nigeria shone at the awards with Mode9 (featuring Nnena) taking home three awards, including the prestigious Video of the Year award, followed by 2Face with two awards.
The show was hosted by comedian David Kau, assisted by Channel O VJs.
Bands performing included Arthur, Freshlyground, HHP, Ntando, Mzekezeke, Longombas, Mista Doe and Gal Level.
The Best Female award went to Mozambique's Lizha James, while the masked one from Nigeria – Lagbaja - took home the Best Male Video.
On the home front, Brickz scooped the Best Kwaito category while Zamajobe walked away with the Best Urban Jazz award. The Best African DJ award was taken by DJ Fresh.
Danny K and Mandoza took home the award for Best Collaboration Video.
Reality/music star
Zola received the Special Recognition Award for his role in the upliftment of youth on the continent; most notably the work that he has done as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador in East Africa.
The show will be screened on Channel O this Sunday, 22 October, at 20h00.
