I recently watched a documentary called Good Hair that Chris Rock researched for 2 years on black hair issues. He researched the different types of views on how black people view their hair, and themselves in their different looking hairstyles after his 3 year old daughter asked him why she doesn’t have Good hair.
He researched companies that make relaxers and what goes into the product and weave. It was baffling to watch what mothers do to their kids to get straight hair! Tjo! relaxing your 2 year old baby’ hair because it looks “nappy”. Why so much pressure on yourself and your child to have a certain look even at the cost of their fragile scalp and baby hair? Weave was a revelation to me. How it is made, how it is attached, how much it costs and what you can’t do when you have it!!
He went to India after he discovered that most of the weave is gotten from there. Tjo! He interviewed a guy that admitted that he steals women’s hair when they go to the movies. Like you go to a movie theater with your long ponytail looking fabulous, then someone cuts it off while you are watching a movie and you come out the theater with short hair.
He went to a company that washes and puts the hair together by sewing it and discovered the owner doesn’t care where the hair comes from and just buys from whoever supplies. The owner was very happy with himself saying that it’s a very good business. I felt sad for all those women that lose their hair not by choice because the company just wants the supply. What he doesn’t like about it some of the hair has ticks, flees and other stuff. Eeeewwww!
It was a real eye-opener for me especially on how expensive it is to get and maintain a weave. I got really intrigued on how much South African women pay for weave because it’s everywhere! I wonder if you can lay-bye the hair like they do in the States – yah! Chris went to a woman that sells weave on lay-bye.

Tjo! Black women we have issues… but it’s interesting to see where the indoctrination of the bad hair comes from and what it has done to us and what it will do to our children if we keep preaching the bad hair stories.
