Goodday bloggers.
I am honoured again today to be bringing you your weekly dose of Makisto's Monday World. Today's issue is built on the backdrop of the not-so-well-celebrated fathers'day, which, by the way, was yesterday. We all know this day never gets as much attention as its equivalent Mothers ‘day, or Valentine’s Day...or even St Patrick’s day for that matter. The spotlight is even often taken from the dads as single mothers are recognised. Shem. Another thing is coz we have so many examples of fathers' who aren't exactly doing a good job - so that unfortunately backfires on all the fathers. It's like as a dad, you need to defend yourself and sorta say..."I'm not as bad as the others, so that should make me a good dad, right?" BS!
Anyway, as much as I have a lot to say about the whole "present-dad-absent-dad" issue, I'll stop here coz today I'd like us to look at a few fathers in our soapie-land and see if they are carving any example for the fathers out there.
ISIDINGO: Zeb Matabane
never mind the macarenas. mkg-mkg
First up, it's Zebediah Matabane of Isidingo. He loves his family (yes he does) and he would do anything to have a grandchild. This also includes impregnating his son's wife when he had to. Madala went as far as planting sperm in his daughter in law, and his excuse was he wants to be grandpa.
You can imagine the embarrassment and disgust that befell Parsons, his son, when he found out. It's like, do you still call this man Dad, Ntate...after he has done that to you? Yha, yha, he had good intentions...but they were still selfish intentions. Perhaps some bloggers will relate to this. A father who claims to be doing everything for your own good. Even when he messes up, he was either protecting you or he was doing it so youd have a better life. hehehe.
GENERATIONS: SIBUSISO DLOMO
Then there is the mighty Sibusiso Dlomo of Generations. You can't remember this character without recalling his gay son and the way he reacted to the news of the homosexuality with a sjambok. Yet again we come across a selfish father who is thinking all about himself. He never stopped to think of what the son could be going through, coming out the closet, and all. All he concentrated on was himself and his ngamla image. He couldn't be seen having a gay son. No way!
Still, some bloggers would relate to this situation. A father who just doesn't accept you coz perhaps you're a boy and he'd have preferred s girl, or vice-versa. Or a dad who is just hard to please.
RHYTHM CITY: Miles Vilakazi
Oh... we can't do this without visiting the Vilakazis of Rhythm City. Their hot and cold relationship leaves much to be desired and poor Sbu is ina hurtful position of having a father who is present yet absent.
Miles is the "Son, I gave yoy everything I could, gave you all the money I could, did my best to raise you by myself, got the best nannies, and hottest stepmothers, what more do you want" typa dad. He seriously doesn't think there's anymore he can do in the father'department. All he is right now to his son is a friend and in fact, a business rival. No wonder he saw no wrong in sleeping with the son's girlfriend. This has left Sbu with deep scars that he ends up looking for fatherly love in all the wrong places, and that is of course in the hands of David Genaro.
I think Miles's type is the most common - the fathers who think paying varsity fees counts as "loving you" and "being there"
SCANDAL: ALEX PHIRI
They are not all bad though...we meet Alex Phiri from Scandal. Yes, I know people don't really watch this show and when they see the name somewher ont the etv guide, they think its probably a jucier version of Debra's 3rd Degree. No...its Scandal and it plays monday to thursday at 7:30pm.
So yha, Alex Phiri...he was faced with the dreadful reality of having his son receive punishment for his own sins. The son was very young at the time his dad's enemies abducted him...with his whole future ahead of him...but he ends up dying. Allthewhile the father was doing all he could to get his son back, and the emotion had been more about the child's wellbeing than the father protecting his own image. Alex had received a later call to fatherhood as he'd been in prison for the first about 8years of his babies' lives, but when he got the title he took total responsibility. We give credit where credit is due.
MUVHANGO: The great Bafhuwi Azwindini Mukwevho
Last but not least...will the real bafhuwi please stand up!!!
When your father loves you so much, he even has an affair with your young auntie, threatens to marry her and just acts stupid. #nuffsaid.
RHYTHM CITY: KOP KHUSE
I nearly finshed this without mentioning the good Kop Khuse. I caught him sometime last week saying that he has not achived any of his dreams wara wara what what. I think he was talking to Fats so fats said to him... "
you have, bra Kop, look at Stone le Tshidi".
Even though he didnt take raising his children as much of an achievement, I say we give it to the fathers who do everything in their power to be present in their homes. I do not believe there is anything that Tshidi and Stone have gone through in their lives that their father didnt know about. He doesnt have much, possession-wise, but he has given his family all the love that God has filled his heart with. BigUps!
IN OTHER NEWS.....
I cannot do a Monday World and forget to mention the show that is Top Shayela. Heheh. Last week we were taken through a day in Babalwa Mneno's life and to be honest there was nothing TopShayela about the lady's daily activities.
Top Shayela nhe, is attempting to do a local Cribs, where we go into celebrities' lives and find out about how posh they live, what they own, what they drive and just how they spend millions, thousands...yes, not hundreds and tens. lol
With the previous two episodes, they covered the lives of Loyiso Bala then of Dj Tira...and at that point I thought the show was taking proper shape - they were looking into the people's work and how they earn their thousands. It made sense, and it was inspiring and interesting. Then in showed up Miss Mneno. It was no doubt the most embarrassing thing I have seen a camera being exposed to. The Top Shayela part of her life was the designer labels, the stack of shoes, going to gym in the morning, the lightbulbs at her soon-coming salon, lunch on a stretch table with "american" friends. Bantu! As if seeing it that day wasn't torture enough, with Vuzu and its repeat tendencies, we were subjected to Babalwa for the whole freakin weekend.
Anyway... I think I heard something that sounded like this was the final episode. Monday World thinks Vuzu needs to do full research and adequate preparations for the second serving. Real Top Shayela stories would be nice, thank you!
FINEPRINT: Monday World congratulates Juju'baby on his second term in the revolutionary house. They say the golden boy's position as the ANCYL president has been extended, apparently uncontested. Show'dem, Juju.
Talking about Juju... someone said the funniest thing - that the South African Big Brother housemate, Luclay, is just like Julius - one moment you like him and the next you just wanna slap the crap outta him.
We know he was up for eviction yesterday but he survived. We continue to say power to the madness - politics aside. But I shall save all the comments for the BigBrother page, lemme not bore the non-uhdikts.
Enjoy your week.
