Wow, the first month of the year is almost over and it's only now that I'm getting a topic I'm excited enough to write about.
AWARDS, CELEBRITIES, AWARDS, MZANSI....it don't get better than THAT!
Welcome to 2008 on Blogiwood.
I had hoped to kick off this year with a David Kau interview, obviously that ain't the case & thanks to the launch of the Stars of Mzansi Awards, I got to find out why he was ignoring me. (More on that in the next post)
Well, the Stars of Mzansi Awards are a great replacement for that initial planned kickoff so as we wait for David Kau to apologise to me (yes David, I mean it), let's talk about the nominees of the 1st Annual Stars Of Mzansi Awards.
The main objective of the awards, as they say, is to "recognise South Africans who are truly making waves in the arts, entertainment and popular culture in 11 categories that span television, radio, comedy, fashion and sport".
I bet it took them 3 months just to come up with that line! Heheheh it don't matter what the objective is guys, I just wanna give a hug to whoever came up with the idea, we love Awards, we love Celebrities, thank you for bringing us these awards.
Before we get to the nominees, here's a quick fact sheet on the Awards;
- The Awards will be held on Friday, 29 February 2008 at the State Theatre, Pretoria
Couldn't they just schedule them for the Saturday? Phela siya sebenza bantu!
- Attendance is strictly by invitation, the event will be broadcast live on SABC 1 but 15 Lucky voters will win double VIP tickets to the awards
(15? Geeeeez, GOOD LUCK, you will surely need it)
- The winner of the 11th Category (Star of Mzansi), wins a "R1 million rands cash prize with half to be donated to a charity of their choice".
Heheheh I guess saying R1 million sounds more fancy than saying "R500 000 cash for the winner & R500 000 donated to the charity of their choice."
- You can check out more info on the Awards on www.starsofmzansi.com
someone please do something about the font on that website, damn straining my eyes...
Other than that I think it's quite nice and contains everything you need to know about the awards. Well, most of the things anyway....
Phew...AT LAST....The categories & nominees:
Ummm, before that, did they have to include the word "STAR" in each category name? Really.....
1. Mzansi Sports Star
This category recognises all men and women who have made a significant achievement on the field of sports. These would be sport stars that have represented Mzansi with pride and brought glory to millions of South Africa
- Bryan Habana
- Makhaya Ntini
- Teko Modise
- Benni McCarthy
My memory is failing me people, what glory did Benni McCarthy bring to millions of SA during the period August 2006 - August 2007? Did he score a goal for Bafana? So what?? I mean, do they even think he'll come and accept that award if he wins? Just give Habana the damn thing!
Not even a single woman on the list...
2. Mzansi Star Actress
This award will recognise that female actress who has kept people glued to the TV sets.
- Nthati Moshesh
- Brenda Ngxoli
- Ashley Callie
- Lucia Mthiyane
With all due respect, I don't think Lucia is a better actress than Nambitha Mpumlwana, Connie Ferguson or Vathiswa Ndara. But then again, the description of this category says nothing about "good acting" so.....
3. Mzansi Star Actor
This category recognises men who have been the talk of town because of their outstanding acting skills, sweating it out in a battle to take home the Mzansi Star Actor Award.
(the sexist who wrote these sure took his time writing this description compared to the one above)
- Menzi Ngubane
- Robert Whitehead
- Sello Maake Ka Ncube
- Zane Meas
I don't remember Menzi doing anything overly exciting on Generations recently...Seputla Sebogodi (Kenneth Mashaba) shoulda been there!
When is Robert Whitehead retiring from "Best Actor nominations"? A tla ikwalla ka bana ba bang!!!
Sello Maake Ka Ncube must be a helluva great actor if this nomination is based on Scandal coz he only joined them in August 2007. I'm very ashamed to admit that I did NOT see LION KING so I can't even begin to comment on that.
Zane Meas...hawu, how come no one told me I was missing out on incredible acting kwi 7de Laan...??
Okay, okay, okay, I know this refers to their acting in general and I don't dispute that they are all good actors but again, why is Kenneth Mashaba not on the list? Because of his looks? Not fair!
I don't really care who takes this one, it rightfully belongs to KennyMash!!
4. Mzansi Star TV Presenter
This award would be bestowed to that individual who has been representing a sense of empathy and soul to tell the stories of Mzansi.
- Nicky Greenwall
- Jeannie D
- Kabelo Ngakane
- Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu
Seeing that Siyabonga Ngwekazi was by some miracle left out (???), I'm voting for Kabelo!!!
I have a problem with the description of this category though, sounds more like they're describing Zola or something...
(Speaking of Zola, why do you keep eluding me like this??)
5. Mzansi Club DJ Star
In this category we will recognise the DJ’s who have skill and technique in what they love most- club Djing.
Tira
Roger Goode
DJ Fistaz
Ryan Dent
Ummm...excuse the ignorance but who is Roger Goode? uRyan Dent yena?
(Just googled them & I feel very ignorant right now......mmmhh, happens a lot lately....)
6. Mzansi Star Fashion
The award will honour that designer, who has changed the way people used to dress and set a trend in the fashion industry.
- David Tlale
- Asanda Madyibi
- Marianne Fassler
- Gavin Rajah
Another category I know nothing about, it's really a matter of taste. But then again, that applies to everything here, I guess.
7. Mzansi Star Comedian
These are the people who brought a big smile to your face, made you laugh your heart out and even forget about all your troubles for a moment or two. These are the people who brought tears of joy to your face and uplifted your broken spirit.
- David Kau
- Loyiso Gola
- Marc Lottering
- Krijay Govender
I mean really now, do we even need to debate this? Do the right thing!
8. Mzansi Star TV Show
The award will go to the best TV show in Mzansi. The show that represents the true diverse South African cultures and stories that has touched some hearts many South Africans identify themselves with.
- Isidingo
- Generations
- Carte Blanche
- Zola 7
I would be very happy if Carte Blanche takes this award but I think it will either be Isidingo or Zola7....If Generations gets this award, I'm going up on that stage for all my hard work on the SHUGA"S G SPOT!
9. Mzansi Star Radio
The Mzansi Star Radio Show award will honour an influential radio show that speaks to Mzansi at different volumes
- Breakfast With Thomas (Metro FM)
- The Rude Awakening (Highveld Stereo)
- Ezasekseni Breakfast Show (Ukhozi FM)
- Gareth Cliff (5FM)
Guess this confirms that Mzansi breakfast shows rock!!
I'm a Breakfast With Thomas fan so I would love for them to take it but I think The Rude Awakening is great too. Gareth always manages to make me laugh, damn....this is about votes, being good doesn't matter...
Well, we all know that DJ Sbu is a master campaigner, he's on a Zulu radio station, so many listeners....y'all know where this is going right??
10. Mzansi Star Music
This category, Mzansi Star Music, will see all musicians who have made a mark in the industry.
(Shame, they were tired here. Firstly the name of this category nje is tired...why not "Star musician" ke? If seriously amagama ebephelile?)
- Hip Hop Pantsula
- Karen Zoid
- Freshly Ground
- Lira
Finally HHP will get his award!!!!!
