About the Show

Head Wrap is a South African social documentary series created and produced by Plexus Films in which South African artists are challenged to move out of their comfort zones and to collaborate across genres, generational, cultural and social differences to create and perform new work.

The series originally premiered on SABC1 on Thursday 30 March, 2006. Re-runs were broadcast on SABC2.

Season 3 premiered on SABC1 on Wednesday 20 February 2008, at 18h30. There are 26 half-hour episodes in the third season.

Synopsis

Head Wrap is a weekly series that brings together cultural documentary and reality TV.

Each week two South African artists are challenged to move out of their comfort zones and to collaborate across genres, generational, cultural and social differences to create and perform new work.

The series challenges artists to explore new territory, creatively and emotionally. The reality aspect of the show encourages audiences to engage with the creative process.

Each week audiences are faced with the personal journeys of the two artists, as they try to find common ground through a creative collaboration that crosses artistic and social differences. Artists and viewers are challenged to bridge the cultural divide and challenge their own preconceptions.

Visual artists, such as painters and sculptors, collaborate with video artists and new media specialists. 70’s jazz legends work with new and emerging talent. Street Rap meets opera; fashion goes sculptural and photojournalism connects with spoken-word poetry.

Head Wrap aims to expand concepts of heritage, gender and culture and introduce new voices into the discussion of culture and creative visions. The series aims to demystify the arts and its process.

Head Wrap is produced by Plexus Films, a Cape Town-based production company specializing in social documentary and arts/popular culture programming.
