The series originally aired in South Africa on SABC2, from 7 November, 2001 to 18 January, 2006. It later aired on DStv's M-Net Series and Sony Entertainment Television (SONY) channels. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.

Judging Amy premiered on SONY on Tuesday 8 March 2011, at 21h25. New episodes broadcast weekly. There are 23 episodes in the first season.

Synopsis

Amy Gray (Amy Brenneman) is a young New York attorney who, after separating from her husband, returns with her young daughter to her childhood home in Hartford, Connecticut.

She becomes a judge on that city's family court at age 34 and eventually gets a divorce. Her mother Maxine (Tyne Daly), with whom she lives, is a social worker for the Department of Children and Family Services, and often at odds with her boss, Sean Potter (Timothy Omundson).

Assisting Amy in the courtroom are her Court Services officer, Bruce Van Exel (Richard T. Jones) and her eager court clerk-turned-lawyer, Donna Kozlowski (Jillian Armenante).

Amy re-establishes relationships with her younger brother Vincent (Dan Futterman), her older brother Peter (Marcus Giamatti) and his wife Gillian (Jessica Tuck).

Judging Amy, based on the real-life story of lead actress, Brenneman's mother, is about three generations of women living together as they confront the personal and professional dilemmas in their changing, challenging lives.
