The Girl Next Door

At some point in history, someone's obsession with the neighbour's girl led to the coining of this phrase. I still can't say for sure what it means and i've grown tired of searching through google results. I wish I had a picture of this girl for whom the phrase was invented.

I've asked around and the answers I've received are as different as black is to yellow or the sun is to an apple. So, this blog is written on the basis of what my perceptions are on the phrase.

A brief study of those that inhabit CELEBVILLE should tell you that all of them are someone's girl/boy next door and they all look different to each other. So which of them epitomises the phrase?
Celebrities aren't exempt from being neighbours, are they? In the context of this blog, the girl next door is the lively, healthy, hardworking girl that your mother would want you to marry..ditto the boy next door.

I could think of the following SA celebrities that fit this bill:

1. Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

sure she has a better pic in her album

The Minister of Foreign Affairs might be a woman right now but at some point in her life, she was a girl. Wealth, fame and even status has failed to rub out the village look in her. Surely she has enough cash to hire a stylist and I am willing to assume that she goes for facials and massages and takes time out to look after her health but she defied the odds and manages, without fail, to look like my definition of girl next door. For all we know she could be groomed to become the First Lady of some African king or president, what with the attires she dons.

2. Khethiwe (what's her real name konje?)

could this be her best pic?

Her role on Generations is exactly what I think the girl from next door looks like and I sadly think she doesn't do much acting because she looks like she relates TOTALLY to the girl on Generations. Khethiwe has a beautiful body, beautiful hair, she speaks beautiful Zulu, heck she's a beautiful girl mara that village look sticks to her like a bad rash.

3. Siphokazi "Sun Goddessi" Maraqana

Hayi ke, I'm sure you GET the PICTURE!!

PS: Go get her album peeps!

4. James Ngcobo aka Khapela

yes, I know he's not a girl!!!

If there is a boy next door look, he has perfected it!! Nuff said

                             -------------------------------------------------
There are others that come to mind, I just didn't find the right pics. People like:

The Brand Power lady, Tuks, KB, David Kau.....hey remove the fame, the make-up and put them in village clothes and I bet you they'll blend in perfectly.

So, who's on your boy/girl next door list (African or International)????????

;-)

GO GOLD!

LOL @ Khapela, yep he is the father/brother next door!

My girl next door in CELBVILLE would be someone like Bubu Mazibuko (the one on Gazlam), she's very down to earth, looks like a reliable somebody - or maybe its the role she plays....but she could easily be my neighbor and i wouldn't be ashamed to go borrow  sugar from her  :-)

Boy next door - Siyabonga Shibe (also on Gazlam), he's just scruffy like that...nothin celeb about him...

Nice blog Toxi - Go TVSA Gold!!! Looking forward to more interesting topics....

31 Jul 2007 03:20

hey Toxy is this boy/girl next door thing a more gentleer way than to  say these schelbs ooze the L-Factor....coz mina my boy/gril next door definition can be someone as cute as that Selimathunzi girl...someone who's fresh but ordinery and someone we can relate to in terms of being less glamorised or having an exotic look...e.g nandipha is definately NOT girl next door, but Zama Ngcobo the fo sho talking head fits the description of girl/next door beacuse she's just ordinery..but that doesnt mean that she's too village....even oorkant Sandra Bullock used to be refered to as having the girl next door look because she ooked less glamurised but still pretty for the public to relate to..but she was not village in her look...so thats my distinction btwn b/g next door and Mir/Miss L-Factor.or the village bumpkin

.I think someone who's village  or a country bumpkin is someone who might actually be as beautiful as a beauty queen but the L-Factor just cant get away from them....or they cant shake off the L-Factor

e.g here's my list of ama-country bumpkin ...aneL-Factor yomhlaba
Vuyo Mkwena the gospel star as hunky as he is...he oozes ubumpatha nobufarm

I can also agree with you on uKhapela , he's not your streetwise tyma or sungthin  he's just Umkhaya finish and klaar  that goes for Khethiwa as well

Ashifa Shabb...is defantely the winner of the L-factor award if ever there is one...I wonder if he even uses a cologne.....insizwa nsi....and Zamani Sphiwe Mtshali.

@belz i dont' think karen would qualify...she's what some people would refer to as white trash and that DOES NOT go along with the girl next door image.

Xhosa Chick...I dont thin Shwi no Mtekhala even should be considered becasue they are original zulu traditionalists, and are not even tryin to glam themselves up, phela you might as well add abo Phuzekhemis, ao Bhekmuzi Lthuli and all the maskand peeps....those folkes will always be like that,  representin  the village people and not tryin to buy into the glam world  like sum schlebs...some of them still have their wives and families in the villages....

by the way I used to think Yvonne Chaka Chak is such a country bumpkin, but I think she has "evolved" into this glamorous educated schleb mingling with the A-listers. In our days we used to think Mabrs was it

Toxic
31 Jul 2007 03:31

Belz..uzoshaywa ngabantu ngo Trevor!! Coco from Mzantsi???? That chick looks like she's never been to a village..lol!

hey Toxy is this boy/girl next door thing a more gentleer way than to say these schelbs ooze the L-Factor....

Spopo...I was avoiding the definition of boy/girl next door because people have different understandings of the term. So i've used the term interchangeably!

coz mina my boy/gril next door definition can be someone as cute as that Selimathunzi girl...someone who's fresh but ordinery and someone we can relate to in terms of being less glamorised or having an exotic look...e.g nandipha is definately NOT girl next door.

Zack I am not wanting to do anything. i've explained why it's difficult to come up with one definition for the phrase and if you don't agree with my definition, then you're definitely proving my point.

I wrote that my definition of GND is lively, healthy, hardworking girl that your mother would want you to marry and if the L-factors fit that description then so be it. It wud be appreciated if you started your own argument and not jump on someone's bandwagon.

girl/boy next door: that girl from selimathunzi...noleen...as glamourised as she is i;d still say lee from isidingo...lesego motsepe...samuel from generations...queen (ex g ka arthur)...etc etc etc

my understanding of the phrase is it's someone who's so famous and successful but at the same time u can relate to..they can easily be ur friend...rich and fame hasn't gone to their head and made them separate and different from the rest of us

Toxic
31 Jul 2007 04:15

KFab, thanks for your response. My question is: what kind of girl IS THE girl next door? That girl against whom we're making these comparisons? I agree with what you're saying and at this point I want you to define this friend who is the girl next door:
my understanding of the phrase is it's someone who's so famous and successful but at the same time u can relate to..they can easily be ur friend

Toxy: I think Kelefabs definition is on point ..i.e Kelefab:my understanding of the phrase is it's someone who's so famous and successful but at the same time u can relate to..they can easily be ur friend...rich and fame hasn't gone to their head and made them separate and different from the rest of us

BUt we are so tempted to pull out the L-Fatorized schlebs because its more fun,...hi hi hi    in fact it makes some of us feel good about ourselves, i.e such and such schleb is such a country bumpkin, I could be better then them...and I'm just ordinery...so I think we bloggers can be forgiven for even including the L-Factored schlebs even though they are not girl/boy-next door per-se...uyangthola...  (the new SABC3 (Dumsan  presenter ooozes the L-Factor in my eyes LOL)

but I know there are some schlebs in here who fit the definition perfectly, as I said like that Selimathunzi girl, (seh even said some people dont recognize her without makeup,) coz she's so ordinery and approachable you'd think she's your sisters frined or classmata...

but I get you Toxi..and I think such schlebs are more admirable that those who are too glammed ..(lookin at you Hlubi Mboya...even though I thin she's hot...I just cant place her in my neighbourhood  hi hi hi)

Would Zola aka Mzolisto  qualify?
The girl list,  have to start with  Asanda Magaqa the new SABC TV journalist.
Despite the number of beauty pageants she has entered but still the glam is either not catching up on her. Or she is not catching up on it.

The president's mother, something, Something  Mbeki.

Okay guys, the point of the blog is not to define what a girl next door is. I clearly said: So, this blog is written on the basis of what my perceptions are on the phrase at the beginning of the blog so I'll leave it at that because I could easily ask:

1. do we NOT relate to the L-factored celebs?
2. are they not someone else's definition of girl-next-door? They are mine..I could have easily lived next door to Zuma or someone that looks like her or any of the people mentioned above.
3.The glammed celebs don't look like ordinary people we could relate to and that's why the L-factors will dominate the list.

Otherwise, I get you Spopo and KFab and Noks and Babygal....

Can the list continue.....there's a shortage of International stars though..

on international shlebs...that's not easy...i think cos they've got makeup and hair people and pr people all around them the reality of who they really are kinda fades out. take beyonce for example, girl we all know and love u but it's hard for us to believe abantu uma bethi u r so humble and such a nice person etc because of the magnitude of your fame and success. even the people and places you hang out at/with. the way u dress and act...it kinda separates u.
