At some point in history, someone's obsession with the neighbour's girl led to the coining of this phrase. I still can't say for sure what it means and i've grown tired of searching through google results. I wish I had a picture of this girl for whom the phrase was invented.
I've asked around and the answers I've received are as different as black is to yellow or the sun is to an apple. So, this blog is written on the basis of what my perceptions are on the phrase.
A brief study of those that inhabit CELEBVILLE should tell you that all of them are someone's girl/boy next door and they all look different to each other. So which of them epitomises the phrase?
Celebrities aren't exempt from being neighbours, are they? In the context of this blog, the girl next door is the lively, healthy, hardworking girl that your mother would want you to marry..ditto the boy next door.
I could think of the following SA celebrities that fit this bill:
1. Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma
sure she has a better pic in her album
The Minister of Foreign Affairs might be a woman right now but at some point in her life, she was a girl. Wealth, fame and even status has failed to rub out the village look in her. Surely she has enough cash to hire a stylist and I am willing to assume that she goes for facials and massages and takes time out to look after her health but she defied the odds and manages, without fail, to look like my definition of girl next door. For all we know she could be groomed to become the First Lady of some African king or president, what with the attires she dons.
2. Khethiwe (what's her real name konje?)
could this be her best pic?Her role on Generations is exactly what I think the girl from next door looks like and I sadly think she doesn't do much acting because she looks like she relates TOTALLY to the girl on Generations. Khethiwe has a beautiful body, beautiful hair, she speaks beautiful Zulu, heck she's a beautiful girl
mara that village look sticks to her like a bad rash.
3. Siphokazi "Sun Goddessi" MaraqanaHayi ke, I'm sure you GET the PICTURE!!
PS: Go get her album peeps!
4. James Ngcobo aka Khapelayes, I know he's not a girl!!!
If there is a boy next door look, he has perfected it!! Nuff said

There are others that come to mind, I just didn't find the right pics. People like:
The Brand Power lady, Tuks, KB, David Kau.....hey remove the fame, the make-up and put them in village clothes and I bet you they'll blend in perfectly.
So, who's on your
boy/girl next door list (African or International)????????
;-)
