The Observer: SA RoadLink Nightmare

Written by TheObserver from the blog TheTVObserver on 17 Dec 2008

When I saw the first accident, I thought it was just that, a terrible accident. When the second one happened I figured it can’t be that weird, after all we have drunk drivers, self righteous drivers, stupid drivers and those in the middle. You end up thanking the Lord almighty for taking those advance driving classes.

When the third one happened, I lost it. Now they broke their own record, soon after the last two which happened within the same month. This is a perfect example of greed. This company seems to have lost its ability to recognize reasons which attract civil lawsuits,  but it seems to enjoy taking money from passengers and risking their lives and even worse they subject them to death at the comfort of their buses.

We need to also acknowledge that thousands of taxis also take people’s lives during and outside of the holiday seasons. However, SA ROADLINK'S situation has moved past what I think is a freak streak. To what I consider to be a carnage of innocent lives!

This blog was inspired by an enews report which left me drained and very confused at how this can continue to happen after last years terrible accident.

An accident can be a result of anything, but the buses fault. I.e A drunk driver, etc. As we would hope, but on the 16th of Dec 2008, those of you who still have hangovers, that’s yesterday.

11 people lost their lives in an accident involving an SA Roadlink bus. The accident occurred on the southbound side of the N2 highway near Hibberdene. The SA Roadlink bus hit the truck it was trying to overtake, whereafter the bus driver lost control and veered into the northbound lanes of the highway, where a head-on collission occurred with a Toyota Camry. Five occupants of the SA Roadlink bus, including a five year old boy, and all 6 occupants of the Toyota Camry (a family on their way to Port Shepstone from Durban) died in the accident. The SA Roadlink bus was travelling from the southern Cape to Durban via the Eastern Cape.

There is nothing as terrifying as a bus accident, the weight of passengers on top of you and the screams and panic. It’s horrible. Imagine bodies and innocent children.

Just so you understand the gravity of this problem here is a run down.

People’s lives are being destroyed by this company and it seems nothing is being done to get them off the transport business.

I cannot understand why a CEO or board member of this company would sit there and ignore the glaring problem that is faced by this company’s incompetence at dealing with this issue, whilst people continue to die. But then again it seems whatever they are selling people are willing to buy. Whatever is going on is a bad reflection of our country, in that people will continue risking their lives with a service which offers the possibly of death.

This is no joke, anyone who has been in an accident or was on a scene of a terrible accident will know how devastating all this could be. To think that as an onlooker you continue driving to your house whilst those involved will be faced with either medical bills or death, perhaps both. Now imagine having to pay someone to help you experience that. No single company in any sane country should be allowed to contribute to the death rate, not even if its legal. PERIOD

These are some of the comments I found

Jane Sexton said “I have used the bus services such as roadlink before. When you are faced with constant mechanical and electrical problems which make the trip unsafe (not to mention the speed they drive - 120) it makes you wander why they are still allowed to operate!”

charlie82 said “These guys should be canned. How many people have to die before someone wakes up?? I have travelled with them before and even though the bus was showing problems from the time we left the station, the driver just kept going. We were then stuck in Swinburne for 3 hours till it was fixed. The drivers drive above 100km/h too! This is is just ridiculous that they are still allowed to operate!!”

However, this is the story that shocked me the most, here is a sample

We were then told that the air conditioner was not working. Wait for it: they opened the toilet door; stacking the cases in front so that the door could stay open and opened the windows every hour or so. Even the door of the bus was opened while driving so that there was some air with passengers clinging to their luggage to prevent it rolling out!

Arriving at Bloemfontein I thought at last this was the end of my nightmare, but oh no the S.A. Roadlink sure had their knife in for me for having the audacity to complain to the manager.  They stopped half a kilometer from the departure point and told me this is their stop for disembarking. I told them that this is not so: it is around the block. I was told I was mistaken and that I must disembark which I did. They then drove around the corner and stopped while I had to walk all the way back to the bus to retrieve my luggage.  Luckily I am a healthy 60 year old.

It is at this point when most companies will sell the business, but in their case I don't think anyone would be interested. The other option is to re-brand the company and any improvements they would like to claim will be implemented under a new brand, hopefully with a better commitment to "zero or very rear cases of accidents". In whatever way you would wish to cut this cake it is still spoiled. Close shop!

I fully agree with bheki cele sa road link has to close shop..i was supposed to go to a wedding in king williams town and found that all the buses are fully booked and only sa road link remained..i have decided not to go and the lady at the counter told me that i was not the only one who made such a decision...i really hope they will be forced to close shop coz every festive season there has to be an accident that involves sa road link...

Its quite shocking to see how many lives SA Roadlink has managed to wreck in this short period they've been in business. Am I correct in saying they only started operating in 2005?

What is even more worrying though is how we as SA consumers give such people so much power. We know of the horrible service these guys give us but we continue to give them our money. It's as if we are saying it's fine we make you rich so you can be able to bribe officials and can continue with the killing sprees. We need to stand together as consumers and stop such nonsense.

Thank you for the report.I most certainly know what it feels like to be in a car accident.i was involved in an accident that involved 4 vehicles on friday last week on my way from work, but that God that everyone was alright and the damage on my car is not that bad.my heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives in SA Roadlink accident.i'm still failind to understand why this issue hasn't been dealt with,it's obvious that the majority of these accidents happen because of the recklessness of their drivers.someone has to do something, people are dying.

A friend of mine was on an SA Roadlink bus from Pmburg to PTA sometime this year (ngabo April), The roof of the bus was blown off!! just before Howick and the bus still continued to PTA-when I fetched her at the station she was freezing cold!

They need to take these busses off the road, we know that the owner is an ANC sponsor but please!

Can somebody tell me who manufactures the bus bodies of SA Roadlink and who makes the engines? Maybe the problem is with those parties.

I know Metrobus is manufactured by Marcopolo using Volvo engine and their accident rate is low.

Thanks B, there lies your answer guys. Tata is inferior and has not proven itself in the market, don't know why they're using it.

The poorer do not have an option but to use SA Roadlink as it is cheaper. As for Bheki Cele he could have done something a long time ago about this if he wanted to.

He has all the powers but all he do is bark and bark yearly.

This saga continues, on the news last night, SA Roadlink said they know nothing about the withdrawal of their licence in KZN and on 702 they called them twice and both times they said their busses will be operating as normal. I wonder who's fooling who here.

Floh
18 Dec 2008 09:48

The seat that Bheki Cele is occupying is very hot, I saw him on the news , he has grown grey hair is such a short period of time, KZN used to be Alufakwa Province, but always when I go home, I don't see any police patrolling, it's very sad, once passing Standerton, you can drive as much as 190km/h why ?

Back to the topic
I am very scared of these buses, all of them, they speed like they are fast cars. But ke SA Roadlink is cheaper as compared to all the luxury buses and the lower class choose it, while not aware that they dicing with their lives. I must say being on the road whether u using public or private is scary, people drives like maniacs.

Lets arrive alive, 90KM/H is fine for this holidays, you've got time to think in case you find yourself in an unfortunate situation.

Khafo
18 Dec 2008 09:48

I want to share my nightmare experience which took place on Friday the 12/12/2008 with you: i was going to Cape Town via Upington, well it was a worst nightmare than the last one coz, we were supposed to leave at 18h00 but we were told that there was a traffic so the bus will arrive at 19H00, we waited until 21h00 that’s when the bus came & we left........... At about 4h00 in the morning in the middle of nowhere after we've left Kimberly the bus stopped and it was broken we had to stay the whole day waiting for the bus to be fixed instead of phoning another bus to come and fetch us.....the drivers stayed there relaxed without telling us what’s going on we had to figure it out ourselves that the bus is broken, and we didn't have food the whole day until I tried to call the office in JHB tell them that the bus is broken they dropped the phone on my ear three times and I phoned Kimberly thats when they told us that the bus will come and fetch us after 12hours of waiting....and I almost collapse because I had to drink medication but there was nowhere where I can find shops to buy food....we've told them and they said there's nothing they can do......I am so fed up with Roadlink their service is not good at all........

But than i know ukuthi abantu abamnyama banjani bengancamela ukubamba umoya baygibele lebhasi ngoba befuna izinto ezishibhile kunokukhokha imali enkulu kodwa bezoba ne-sure ukuthi baphephile.

This is my experience with Roadlink. We were supposed to leave for Pretoria from Polokwane at 12:20pm but we waited for three hours for the bus from Pretoria to arrive because it broke down on the way and had to be fixed. Finally, at 14:30 pm the bus arrived and we left for Pretoria. Just after Mokopane the bus broke down again. After a long wait we were told that the trip was posponed. We were not given any means of transport to our homes. Roadlink didn't even care how we went back to our homes. I phoned my sister who stays in Polokwane and she came to pick me up from where the bus broke down. That was around 18:00pm.
