I've been tuning in to Isidingo this week to catch up on what's happening - to see how the
new Charlie's doing and so on - and I was shocked to see that the show's calling Facebook "Facepage" and Twitter "Chirper".
It's so unbelievably lame I almost eye-rolled my face off! What's the problem with using Facebook and Twitter?!
Oh wait ... they probably haven't paid the show for a mention and now the show doesn't want to mention them by name yet they want to use them as part of the storyline.
It comes across as
very cheesy and irrelevant. It also doesn't make any sense in the context of the show and has no consistency. They always talk about cultural phenomenon on Isidingo - right now the elections etc. - and they don't have a made up name for the elections so why are they doing it with Facebook and Twitter? They're as much of a global cultural phenomenon as loads of other things they speak about.
As a result, the storylines surrounding them come across as very
not in touch. As if the show's getting the names wrong. I found it very irritating and distracting - each time I heard them mention either of them, it took me right out of the action because I was so annoyed.
It wouldn't be quite as bad if they at least set up a website that the names link to so you could interact with the characters or something but as you'll see if you visit the links, both
www.facepage.com and
www.facebook.co.za have absolutely nothing to do with Isidingo. Bah!!
