I am not the one to always watch Generations and when the kiss happened, I was busy lifting weights at the gym. However, upon inspecting social media on my phone, I saw some buzz about Noluntu and Senzo kissing.
I just had to watch last night episode repeat at work, for the remaining 10 minutes that is. Before I unpack this, ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to congratulate Generations on redeeming itself and going back to telling great stories. Credit must be given where it is due.
I have since noticed Generations is all about love these days. When the character of Noluntu was introduced to the show, she was smitten with Jason Malinga who is Senzo Dlomo’s boyfriend. We all believed she was going to snatch Jason right under Senzo’s nose as she didn’t care about how Senzo felt about her buddying “friendship” with Senzo’s man. Plus, Noluntu has always been scandalous. Remember the sex tape thing with some married man or whoever?
Now Senzo’s parents are apparently in town for umsebenzi or something which I am not sure if it’s an umsebenzi to ungay Senzo or welcoming him to the Dlomo family. Yazi thing is: I am so busy I don’t have time to always watch Generations. But I had to steal time off work and watch the kiss.
Initially we all wanted Senzo to watch out as Noluntu was busy trying to win Jason over despite the fact that he is bi-sexual and that he is dating gay Senzo. The show did well by turning things around and twisting everything because we are tired of guessing their stories.
Over the past weeks, Senzo and Noluntu grew closer and closer especially because they work together. After Jason had a long day at work, he asked his boyfriend to go out for drinks with him but his boyfriend invited his colleague. Noluntu acted like she didn’t wanna join them but Senzo insisted and they ended up going to a nightclub as a trio.
During the course of the clubbing, some random guy started hitting on Noluntu who ran to Senzo and acted like Senzo is her man and Senzo kissed her to chase the guy away. Poor Jason was jealous and didn’t like it. He made it clear he didn’t like his boyfriend kissing Noluntu, a woman for that matter. However, Senzo said Jason was overeating because Jason knows he (Senzo) is gay.
Meanwhile, Noluntu was already falling in love with gay Senzo and we could even see her smiling inwardly each time she received a hug from him. With Senzo’s parents being in town, I gather Senzo used Noluntu to front her as his girlfriend and she agreed to it hoping it will turn out to be like that, for real that is, and it seems dreams do come true. He even asked his live-in boyfriend to move out of the Dlomo house so his parents shouldn’t be suspicious and Jason didn’t take that very kindly and saw it as a deliberate plot to get rid of him for good.
Fast-forward to last night’s episode, Jason tells Senzo it is over and he confides in Noluntu who offers her a shoulder to cry on and they embrace. Senzo breaks down and cries out loud prompting Noluntu to brush his shoulders during the hugging. As the hug ended, the two locked eyes and Senzo, not Noluntu, planted a passionate kiss on her lips and she replied affectionately and they stopped for a brief moment and they continued kissing again.
Generations is taking the homosexual storyline to another level because Frankly Speaking, having the two gay lovers was becoming boring to viewers as the story had stopped serving its purpose i.e that of challenging society and portraying the battles of homosexual people.
The story is well done and well told. Thus, the treatment makes justice to the gay community. For instance, Senzo wants his adoptive parents to think he is a “man” who can bring a makoti home. On the other hand, Senzo trying to please the parents hurts his boyfriend as Jason feels Senzo is ashamed of him. Though Senzo is doing it to gain "acceptence" from his parents, Jason feels it is at the expense of their relationship. According to my gay nephew, the closet is comfortable as there is no drama surrounding your sexual orientation. Contexualising this, it is very comfortable or rather convenient for Senzo to front as a “straight” guy.
But, there is one thing that Senzo isn’t aware of: Noluntu is doing this with all of her heart despite the fact that everyone in town knows Senzo is gay. “Women are very brave. They will date you knowing very well you are openly gay,” my nephew tells me reminding me of an incident when he was at an FET college and a girl hit on him despite my nephew being openly gay. “She said she doesn’t mind sharing me with a guy,” my nephew confided in me.
Over the years, Jason and Senzo have weathered quite a few storms. At some point, they even took a break from each other but before long, they were back to each other’s loving arms. We are not sure if we are gonna see a situation that will lead to Senzo dating Noluntu while on the other hand, seeing Jason. However, it seems likely that things will head towards that direction and there are definitely interesting times ahead.
One doesn’t need to be Dr Phil or Felecia Mabuza-Suttle to see Senzo and Jason are still very much in love. Noluntu may end up being hurt because she is not protecting her heart and goes into this with her eyes half-open or blind to start with and only uses her heart to see. She doesn’t allow herself to see this from a bigger-scheme of things.
Will Senzo leave Jason for Noluntu? Will Jason and Senzo kiss and make up? How can Noluntu fall in love with a gay man? Is this some sort of a face Senzo is going through? How will Joburg-hers in Generations react when they find out Senzo and Noluntu kissed “for real”? Most importantly, how will Jason feel about the kiss? These are just some of the questions that 6 735 000 Generations viewers are asking themselves. As I also want answers, I am going back to booking my front-row 20:00 seat and there will be no negotiations with those who watch a different channel.
If you are used to calling me at that time, please don’t, I am a very busy person, ok…and this time around, I will not be busy at the gym around that time, I will be busy watching Generations for riveting viewing that only comes once in a while.
