2015 SAFTAs: and the nominees are ...

Nominees for the 9th annual South African Film and Television Awards were announced at Atlas Studios in Auckland Park on Tuesday night (24 February).

The evening was attended by industry professionals, the media, nominees and representatives from the National Film and Video Foundation who organise the awards.

The star of the night: kykNET's period drama Donkerland which owned the Drama category with 12 nominations including a nod for Best Drama and multiple nominations for the cast. The series is based on a Deon Opperman play of the same name and follows two families - a family of settlers and a black family of workers on the farm Donkerland in the district of Weenen in KwaZulu-Natal.

SABC2's Afrikaans drama Swartwater also attracted notable attention with eight nominations in total while 90 Plein Street grabbed seven.

As is custom, there's plenty of twilight zone phenomena to try to wrap your head around. The Best Game Show category's bloated with advertiser funded shows and Rhythm City's up for Best TV Soap despite the fact that it lost over a million viewers in 2014. The plunge didn't happen in the time frame that the awards apply to but still, you'd think such attention would go to another show instead.

While you try to make it sense of it all, these are the nominees in both the TV and film categories:
