Idols 19: Niikiey follows in the footsteps of Season 15's Sneziey

The competition reached the final four on Idols 19 on Saturday evening (14 October) when Niikiey "Niki" Kubheka lost her spot as a contender for the win.

Niki followed in the footsteps of her Idols shero Sneziey Msomi who also didn't win back in 2019 when the terrifying Qwabe twins were on the loose and Luyolo Yiba won the title.

Niki may have lost out on going further but at least she didn't need to be upstaged by PJ Morton who was all up in it on Saturday. PJ, PJ, PJ! It was all about him mentoring the final three, performing, promoting his single.

We've said it before and we'll say it AGAIN: Idols is about the contestants and not about promoting professional singers. And he's going to be back for the finale unfortunately.

Let's rather put the spotlight on the finalists: they started Saturday's show as a Top 5 by singing Come Together by The Beatles and then the final four sang two songs each: the first curated by you-know-who and the second was a popular local love song.

Here's a recap of their performances by Mzansi Magic:

Princess began with Erykah Badu’s On & On, receiving standing ovations and praise across the board.

Somizi ecstatically expressed, “This performance was smooth and jazzy. You've won a fan in me."

Her follow-up, Shayizandla by Naima Kay, resonated deeply, with JR Bogopa saying, “You have given this song a rebirth."

Nkosi chose John Legend’s timeless Ordinary People and, despite being urged to connect more with his audience, was praised for his growth.

However, his interpretation of Ringo’s classic Sondela brought mixed reviews, with JR saying, "You had an opportunity for a home run there, but missed it."

Faith began with Musiq Soulchild’s Love, inspiring Somizi to remind him of the looming finish line.

Yet, his performance of Bekezela by Bekezela saw the return of Faith, with Thembi Seete happily commenting, "This was amazing. Welcome back."

Thabo left the audience roaring with Prince’s Kiss and received rave reviews for his second act, Ndinike Indawo by Jaziel Brothers.

Somizi, thoroughly impressed, said, “If there’s one person that deserves to win this competition, it’s you.”
