Aletta Bezuidenhout was a Kenyan-born South African actress, director and playwright who has worked primarily in theatre, winning numerous awards over her career.
She was best known to television viewers for her role in the M-Net drama series Known Gods.
Other television series she acted in include Sam et Sally, Westgate, Die Sonkring, Lied van die Lappop, Charlie Jade, Orion and Vloeksteen.
Aletta also had numerous film and TV movie credits, including Weerskant die Nag, Die Koningin en die Rebelle, Die dame met die kamelias, My Country My Hat, Thicker Than Water, On the Wire, Committed, The Good Fascist, Paljas, Pure Blood, In My Country, Curse of the Ring, Spoon and Jail Caesar.
As a playwright her credits include Time of Footsteps (Windybrow Theatre), Silent Envelope (Market Theatre), Angel in a Dark Room (Adcock Ingram Theatre) and Little Big World (Market Theatre).
Her numerous stage credits include Klaaglied vir Koos (DALRO Award - Best Actress), Anthony and Cleopatra, Scenes From an Execution (DALRO Award - Best Actress) and Maids, for which she received both a DALRO Award for Best Actress and a Vita Award for Best Actress.
Aletta died in her sleep in the early hours of Tuesday 13 February, 2024. She was 74.
