Dummy's Guide: Understanding US Ratings
Know the numbers, where's it from and what it means. Not sure how it works. Read this Dummy Guide...
The Biggest Winner:
Desperate Housewives (ABC) - continues with its strong ratings from last week's hyped episode. The numbers fell slightly but the show is No. 1 show of the week.
The Biggest Loser:
American Dad (FOX) - This show is only doing alright but with The Simpsons seeing a resurgence last night, again, American Dad could not hold onto the audience losing nearly 3 million viewers from its lead-in and a big chunk in the demo (5.2 to 3.9) despite them both being animated and compatible.

-Percent Change From the Comparable Year-Ago Evening (Sunday 13/11/05):

NBC: +113, CBS: no change, Fox: - 7, ABC: -20
-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC led the Sunday troops for the third consecutive week, with the New York Giants/Chicago match-up on Sunday Night Football at a hefty 13.4/20 in the overnights from 8:15-11:30 p.m. Comparably, expect the Peacock net also to finish first for the evening in total viewers and adults 18-49 once the fast national results are posted at pifeedback at 12 p.m. ET. Earlier in the evening on NBC, however, pre-game show Football Night in America averaged a typically lackluster (and fourth-place) 3.9/ 6 from 8-9 p.m., followed by the 15-minute pre-game show at a beefier 10.1/15 from 8-8:15 p.m.
CBS opened the evening on a winning note in the overnights with the tribute to Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes at a dominant 12.4/19 from 7-8 p.m. That led into younger-skewing The Amazing Race X at a 7.4/11 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (#3), followed by the solid combination of the relocated Cold Case (#3, 10.3/15) and Without A Trace (#2, 10.7/17) from 9-11 p.m. Keep in mind, of course, that The Amazing Race X will likely flex some muscle demographically once the fast nationals are released.
ABC finished third overall in the overnights (but will likely rank second among adults 18-49 once the fast nationals are released) courtesy of its combination of America’s Funniest Home Vides (#3: 5.9/ 9), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#2: 8.9/13), Desperate Housewives (#1: 14.4/20) and the now addictive Brothers & Sisters (#3: 8.8/14). Although retention of 61 percent for Brothers & Sisters (the best new relationship drama since thirtysomething) out of Desperate Housewives in the overnights could be better, positive word of mouth is beginning to spread. And it is, indeed, a show worth keeping. As for Desperate Housewives, congratulations Marc Cherry. Your show is back in true must see form.
The NFL Football overrun on Fox led the network to a whopping (and dominant) 14.6/22 in the overnights in the 7 p.m. half-hour, followed by post-show The OT at an 8.4/14 at 7:30 p.m. That led into ageless The Simpsons at a healthy 7.7/11 (#4) at 8 p.m., followed by also fourth-place overnight finishes for American Dad (5.8/ 8), Family Guy (6.2/ 9) and The War at Home (4.2/ 6) from 8:30-10 p.m. Expect Fox, of course, to perk up demographically when the fast nationals are released (with The Simpsons, no doubt, the stand-out).
Over at the CW, recently relocated 7th Heaven remains worthy of a positive mention with a 2.9/ 4 from 8-9 p.m., and growth out of a repeat of Smallville (#5: 1.4/ 2 at 7 p.m.) of a whopping 107 percent. Comparably, while this is a decline for 7th Heaven from it’s year-ago Monday performance on the WB, it is still an improvement over recent sitcoms Girlfriends and The Game. Let’s see what happens next week with a stronger lead-in once veteran sitcom Reba returns. A repeat of America’s Next Top Model dipped to a 1.6/ 2 (#5) from 9-10 p.m.
