Episode 311
Enter 77

Super Sayid is back!!!
I am really, really pleased about that. It seemed, at some stage, that Super Sayid was to be forever hidden from us, as his alter-ego Sayid romped in the jungle with his jungle buddies Locke and Kate.

Let me explain my Super Sayid thing. Sayid has always been the person with the cool logic and good plans when everyone else seemed to be falling apart at the seams. He’s cool and intelligent, and he’s been missing for a while. One of my complaints during an earlier episode this season was that Sayid was not being used to his full potential.

And Super Sayid is needed now more than ever. Locke, that infernal man, seems to be determined to just do things his own way. The problem with Locke’s way is that it is never well thought out - he’s a very impulsive person, and often bases his decisions on whims he feels show him the correct path. And these whims of his have not exactly brought the losties a great deal of luck, have they.

This is why I’m glad that Sayid is with Locke at the moment. He’s not as easily influenced as Boone, and will not hesitate to ensure that logic wins the day. Anyway, enough with that, let’s get on with the story.

We finally get to meet Pirate guy and he has a name. Whether it really is Mikhail remains to be seen. And, what’s even more interesting is that the losties happen across his little hut/hatch while following Locke’s 305 degrees North direction. Mikhail initially claims to be the last surviving Dharma Initiative member, but his ruse is quickly revealed by Super Sayid.

The Flame

Mikhail claims to have been the manager of the Flame station ever since the battle between Dharma and the Others. I wonder if this is the only satellite that the Others have. It’s possible, but it seems like all communications are down at the moment anyway. Mikhail reveals quite a bit about Dharma and the Others; okay, maybe not so much about the Others, but at least what happened to the Dharma people.

At some stage Dharma decided to “purge” the island of its original habitants, to whom Dharma referred to as hostiles. Interestingly, Desmond used that very same term when he referred to the Others as well. These “hostiles” were on the island for a very long time. Interesting. Benry says he’s been on the island his entire life. How far back do the Others go? Could it actually be possible that generation upon generation of Others have been living on this island unbeknownst to the rest of the world? This could explain who built four-toes (the statue).

Another point from yesterday’s episode is that Others are willing to go as far as killing themselves rather than let themselves be held captive. These people are just freaky.

At least Super-duper Sayid reveals that he has a map that lead to barracks deep in the jungle. A map to what must surely be Otherville! Awesome dude! Mikhail doesn’t seem pleased about it all. I’m hoping that Sayid, as super as he may be, does not decide to just go along with just Kate and Locke and Danielle. He needs to recruit a few more people… Such a pity that Eko and Ana-Lucia are dead. They are the perfect people to have joined him in this kind of mission.

Somebody please give Sayid a nail clipper.  Maybe he could borrow Jackass's

I’ve been trying to think of what to say about Locke and his stupidity in this episode. The man does seem to have a button-pushing fetish, and always wants to be pushing some kind of button; except for his whole “we must not push the button” stint last season. This time, just like his “we must not push the button” stint last season, results in yet another explosion. D’oh, Locke!

Boom

But in his defence, he didn’t know that the hut was rigged with C4, and he probably thought that maybe the “Enter 77” thing could have sent out a help signal. But honestly, the man just doesn’t think sometimes. Would it have killed him to just ask Sayid and Kate for their opinions before pushing any damned buttons? The look on his face when the hut blew up was priceless though.

Did I do that?  Whoopsie!

Other island happening include a “ping-pong” (or table tennis, as we like to call it) match between Sawyer and anyone else. Sawyer is pissed that his stuff is missing and wants it back. Sawyer looses, naturally… and to Hurley! Heh! The terms are that his infamous nicknames cannot be used for a week. A whole week! Can the man survive?

I’m not very fond of discussing flashbacks, but Sayid’s last night left me in a bit of a quandary. I was so sure that he didn’t do it… until he confessed. Now I am torn between him torturing that poor woman and to his admitting it to give her closure. Or maybe he admits to it even though he didn’t torture her because he can’t bear to face the things he’s done?

Another great episode in what is turning out to be a fantastic season!

This is what we learnt this week

• Sawyer is a sore looser
• Hurley can play a mean game of ping-pong
• Dharma tried to purge the island of its original habitants
• The Others communications are still down, and now that The Flame has… er… gone up in flames, is it possible that they are truly without any way of contacting the world.
• The purple light following the end of the hatch was mentioned yet again. I’m a firm fan in the belief that if something keeps popping up, it’s important.
• Sayid has a map to what we hope is Otherville.

Interesting Trivia

• The commands that Dr. Mark Wickmund/Dr. Marvin Candle mentions in the video-menu are:

Enter 2-4: Pallet drop
Enter 3-2: Station up-link
Enter 3-8: Mainland communication
Enter 5-6: Sonar access
Enter 7-7: Hostile incursion

• Numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

Enter 2-4: Pallet drop (8 + 16 = 24)
Enter 3-2: Station up-link (16 + 16 = 32)
Enter 3-8: Mainland communication (15 + 23 = 38)
Enter 5-6: Sonar access (4 + 4 + 8 + 8 + 16 + 16 = 56)
Enter 7-7: Hostile incursion (4 + 15 + 16 + 42 = 77 or 4 + 8 + 23 + 42 = 77)

• The Russian dialogue that occurs towards the end of this episode is as follows:

Klugh: Mikhail! Mikhail! You know what to do.
Mikhail: We still have another way out.
Klugh: We cannot risk it. You know the conditions.
Mikhail: There is another way.
Klugh: They captured us. We will not let them to get into the territory.
Klugh: You know what to do. That's an order.
Mikhail: We still have another way!

• In the Flame station, Sayid finds several folders from the Dharma Initiative. The two that he looks at in more detail are titled "Dharma Initiative Food Drop Protocol" and "Dharma Initiative Operations Manual", also we can see that both of them have the same serial number: DI 90M1654-21644.
