Episode 316
One of Us

Julie, Julie, Julie.
What are you up to? My word, she’s almost as sneaky as our dear friend Benry. Hee. I know it’s so wrong, but I feel like rubbing my hands in glee. This turns of events thrills me, and the anticipation of what’s to come in the upcoming and closing episodes of this excellent season is almost too overwhelming to bear.

Kate and Sayid finally return to camp with Jackass and his new side-kick Juliet. There were hugs all around and some major relief and emotion spilling from Sawyer and Kate as the two embraced. I actually like these two as a couple and as much as I loathe admitting this, my Kate-hate is slowly being chipped away. Right now, all that’s keeping my Kate-hate going is sheer will power.

I had to smile at Jackass’s thick headedness though. Did he honestly believe that his “You should trust her because I do” argument was going to win anyone over? Helllooo! Jackass, have you been living on this same island as the rest of the losties? I don’t know what he expected; first he brings home an Other, tells them that he had a chance at escape (without them nogal) and then delivers the final blow that Locke upped and left with the Others willingly.

He seems somehow very disconnected from everything. I feel that he’s lost some of himself this season. It could just be his way of dealing with things, but it worries me. This will be the first time that his leadership is going to be questioned (and I am sure it will be) and I am concerned about how he’s going to handle it. Jackass can be a bit unstable sometimes, and I don’t say that with my usual disdain for him. The thing about Lost is that you find yourself worrying over characters you don’t care too much for.

Juliet. Wow. What an actress. She has Jackass so totally fooled. Here’s the thing that I find so disconcerting – she wants to get off the island. Of that I am sure. She desperately wants off the island, but she still goes along with Benry’s plans. What hold does this man have on her? Or… is she planning on double crossing him? With Juliet I am never entirely sure of exactly what her motives are – is she really in Benry’s back pocket or is she going to side with the Losties. And then even if she does side with the losties, how can we ever be sure that this is not a part of their master plan?

At least we know that Super Sayid and Sawyer are also not fooled by Juliet. I can’t wait for a showdown between Super Sayid and Juliet. For now, Juliet is safe, but Jack has to allow her to be questioned at some stage. As leader of the group, he needs to ensure their safety over and above hers. He cannot allow it not to happen. Their lives depend on it and he can’t be all that stupid to think that the losties will leave it alone.

Before we get to the whole Pregnant Woman Syndrome (PWS) on the island, I’d like to take a moment to ponder if Charlie is now not in danger. Hurley lets slip that Charlie was the one who killed Ethan. I was so sure that Juliet and Ethan had a thing going so I was surprised, and rather disappointed that it turned out to be Goodwin that she was shagging. Furthermore, she makes it very known that Ethan acted on his own when he kidnapped Claire and Charlie. I don’t buy it.

This Pregnant Woman Syndrome that seems to be present on the island… I am not sure what to make of it either. Claire seems to have been ok. We know now that an implant in Claire caused her to fall ill. Implant? Implant?!? What are these people doing?? And what concerns me the most about this PWS thing is Sun. Is Sun safe?

But like everything on this show, the PWS has to be questioned too. Juliet says that Claire is the first woman on the island to give birth, and we know that’s not true. What about Danielle? Didn’t she give birth to Alex on the island?

There was just so much going on in this episode, that I’m sure I missed so many points. So…What have we learnt this episode

• Juliet is a cunning woman who is still apparently in cahoots with Benry
• Pregnant woman seem to die on the island before they give birth
• The outside world was abuzz with the news that Oceanic Flight 815 disappeared
• Ben instructs Mikhail to get files of each of the passengers of flight 815 when it first went down. Just where does Mikhail get all his info from anyway??
• Juliet’s sister is apparently alive and well and cancer free. She has a young son.
• Jacob. Well, we still know nothing about him except the fact that the mere mention of his name is enough to garner an attitude change in Juliet. Just who is he? Isn’t it time we met him??
• Sun may now be in danger of either loosing her life or her baby.

New Questions

• Who’s side is Juliet on? Is she even on anyone’s side at all?
• What type of implant has been… ermm implanted into Claire. Who else has received this implant?
• What is Benry’s great plan? He tells Juliet that he’ll see her in a week. In terms of Lost episodes that’s about 2 episodes (As a few days since that meeting has passed already)

My brain hurts.

Interesting Trivia

• Juliet says that every woman in the island died during their pregnancy until Claire. But also Rousseau gave birth to Alex on the island 16 years back.
Also, Rousseau's baby wasn't conceived on the island, as Claire's.

• Mikhail said that there were 324 people on flight 815. There were 23 people who survived the initial crash from the tail section and 48 survivors from the fuselage (not including those who were fatally wounded but didn't die instantly). As well as the pilot who wasn't killed until after the crash that means that 252 people died in the crash.

• When Juliet is in the Flame station with Ben and Mikhail there are several different tv screens showing different news reports of flight 815. The headlines seen include: "Plane Disappears Over Pacific Ocean", "Airline Missing" and "Search for Flight 815".

• When Juliet is tying the final knot before the episode ends, the making of said knot forms the number 8.

• In the departure lounge prior to drinking the orange juice, we see that Juliet is about to be flown via a company called Herarat, which is an anagram of Earhart. Amelia Earhart was an American pilot who vanished while flying across the Pacific Ocean in 1937.

Herarat could also be a heteronym for "her a rat," hinting that Juliet was working with Ben all along.

Interesting Screencaps

Charlie and Aaron.  Little Aaron is growing up.  He's a cutie, and Aaron's quite sweet too.

Georgeous scenery.  If it wasn't for the Others, the monster, Dharma and all that other freaky stuff, it wouldn't be such a bad place to find yourself lost on.

Aww.  You get hugs, and then you get hugs.  This is one of those hugs.

I'm surprised that her little speech got the reaction that it did. Come on Super Sayid!!  The Losties need you.
