Behind The Name:
Episode 3Broadcast date: 19 September 2007
In this episode of Behind The Name, the spotlight falls on top fashionista Josie Borain.
When Josie Borain left South Africa for Paris in the eighties, she did not anticipate that she would usher in the glamorous era of the supermodel. Says media icon and publishers of Cosmopolitan, Jane Raphaely:
“I first knew Josie Borain as a billboard. High above the hot dogs and jostling crowds in Times Square in New York, this long, lean South African wore Calvin Klein’s skimpy underwear as coolly as if she had been fully clothed.
“Of course, Josie was also the first of the great androgynous femme fatales. Her beauty was very boyish, emphasised by a trademark haircut…”
Other fashion icons that she has worked with include Ralph Loren, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford. Yet, to this day, despite the bight lights and the big cities, the international creme de la creme and the most exquisite people in the world, she has remained unassuming, humble and earthy.
