Hi everyone, my name is sdakamiswa and I’m an alcoholic…..*everybody waving* Hi. Well to tell you the truth I am not really an alcoholic, I am a recovering alcoholic. It has been just over sixteen weeks since I have had a drink…. Well that is not entirely true since I have fallen off the wagon like twice. The one time what happened is, I did have like 4 shots of tequila. The reason I did that is I was at a friends surprise birthday party and I succumbed to peer pressure and had a drink. I don’t know if this should count cause I did not like get drunk from the four shots. The 2nd time well it was recently. I was on a business trip to CT and decided to spend the weekend with a buddy. Well what happened in CT the peer pressure again, even though it was not as bad as when I am with my friends here in Jozi.

heineken                  tequila

Peer pressure? You may ask… Yeah, peer pressure happened. Not only do we experience it in our teens, I have since noticed that this is something that affects even adults badly even though we might want to call it differently or even admit it at all that we experience it.

At this point you might be asking yourself what is the point of this article, well apologies for taking so long uphum’ egusheni (coming to the point). Well since I like ‘stopped drinkin’ I’ve found myself sort of getting bored. I still hang out with my same buddies that I used to drink with. I have however noticed the stupid things that ‘we’ do when we are drunk and have been embarrassed thinking to myself if I ever behaved the same way when I was drunk. I have since asked myself besides the drinking and parting what else can a black man do? What are his options? At the clubs, house parties and the braais at the parks it is always the same faces discussing the same topics, and that has now become as exciting as watching paint dry….. I am not sure if making new friends is the answer, I foresee that even then our entertainment will be the clubbing, partying, restaurants, park braais etc and same old stuff eventually. Believe me I am definitely for these activities but not on a repetitive basis i.e. every weekend……

A thought occurred to me that I pose this question to my fellow bloggers and find out, what is it that they do for fun besides the usual stuff? I am in desperate need of a hobby/hobbies that can substitute the activities that are associate with drinking alcohol. I am also facing a dilemma of whether will I ever go back to drinking alcohol since the only fun I know is that and its associated activities?

I have however done some stuff that I never used to do a lot of like going to movies, an activity that I enjoy but I am looking for more. I have since come across a place that offers go karting and am dreading suggesting this to my friends. However I am hoping since we are all in to cars and racing they will find this an interesting activity instead of the normal drinkin escapades.

kart1  kart2

Secondly a colleague has been inviting me for a while to join him at the golf course and give it a try. Problem with golf is the money needed to get you going; however I am seriously considering it and I will take the plunge since I need a hobby.

greens   golf bag

Thirdly I have always been curious at learning POKER and I did a bit of research on the net….thank gaad for google and wikipedia, my poker classes begin next week……. With POKER I know drinking goes with it… chances are in my quest for a hobby I might find one or two and I guess havin ‘a’ drink will go with it…. With POKER me and my boys will find an alternative activity with the drinking except the usual….

So fellow bloggers indulge me and let me know any interesting things you get up to for fun other than the usual……..

Wow... Sdaka you are a good writter mfana this is nice. Well about drinking i have heard people say once you sart you cant quit but its all a lie.I believe if you tell yourself you wanna do something there is no stoping you. Coming to peer pressure it is also a good test..when you are with those drinking friends and they offer...tell yourself that you will shame them by not doing it and believe me it works, but remember you not doing anyone but yourself a favour. same goes wit smoking..
A game of Golf oh lord am bad in it ..it actually needs time and concentration. Have hit a few balls before and its just not for me. Poker i dont even wanna know that damn thing LOL...!

Sdaka, there is nothin that i can suggest that are not associated with "drinkin".[Un]fortunately drinking is associated with fun for most of us therefore you can separate fun and drinkin most of the the times, therefore leavin your friends and activities that you guys used to do is not the answer, what i can suggest to you is that ,try drinking something non alcoholic, believe me is not that easy as i asy it,it requires lot of descipline but is worth a try.Golf, poker go hand in hand with drinking, after kart racing then what ?

Sdaka, great article my friend. I think quiting drinking is not the answer, alcohol is the source of happiness, fun and everything nje, jsut look at you now, you are miserable coz you want to substitute drinking with car racing, no dear, jsut go back to your Heineken. If you need to minimise your drinking, do that, just dont rule out drinking, not now Sda.

28 Nov 2007 01:48

I dont believe it!!!!Peeps are soo damn wrong!Alcohol is fun when is not a source of happiness,as an accompaniment when doing things you like. Not as a source of fun!Sdakwa,I salute you for quitting bra,big ups!I once was hospitalised at varsity for alcohol poisining,so giving up was NEVER an option for me.I simply had a few more hobbies than normal.Knowing them darkies, friends ridiculed me for buying ama planes, remote controlled car,a quad bike and maaaany board games.

At least I drink twice in a week, with my wife,or course. But we never overdo it.

We drink when having fun,not to have fun!

TDC: no you aint an alcoholic. People drink for different reasons really, realx, fun, stress, for me, i think mainly its because i jsut love drinking, it really has neva occured to me to quit drinking. Sda, another thing you can do is read books, thats another hobby you can look at, even though its nice reading a lovely book wiht a nice glass of wine.

@ monchooza say that again my boet….

have tried bavaria the 0 % beer and am cool with it…….. after the racing have some Bavaria then heard home……

@ lepogo, my problem perhaps has been the (over) drinkin to have fun and not the when, I think I should adopt that and I guess that will go with limiting my intake…..
I have a PS2 and a few games bt must admit ive touched the thing less than ten times over the many months ive had it

believe me peeps I am not against the usual stuff that we always end up doing but am looking for other things to do when I do not want to do the usual…..

@mina-moo, I need more info on that bowling place ko Kew please….

Mina I find that it does the trick for me you know it really really helps me
when I'm down and lonely I just pour my poor self a glass of JC le roux  and sort of drown me sorrows it feels good when i'm a bit tipsy but it has it dark side because   sungtimes i cry meself to sleep  but then i would sleep the whole nite unlike evry other nite

HI SDAGWA! u must try to have friends with different characters like me. I got a sbotho friends, deecent friends and bit><chy friends.
the sbothos drinks 24/7
the deecent ones are after money, and all luxuries they don't drink at all
the bitc><hy just concentrates in s*x and money and can have a couple of wines glasses in deecent places.

so, I am able to udjust myself anytime.

28 Nov 2007 02:33

Sda,you must not drink to have fun but rather let the drink compliment the fun you having....taking a look at your friends might be the first point although i'm not encouraging that you change your friends now...

i've noticed with me that the only time i get sloshed is when i'm with certain individuals and i always spend more than what i budgeted for and to me this was an alarm to check my habits when i'm with them and things have changed...

giving up totally should be a natural feeling and not because of the circumstances....i used to enjoy getting sloshed but i just dont see a point anymore....wanted to be in clubs during the week and weekends but not anymore....beer couldn't last a day in my fridge but now it last for weeks...so somethings in life you outgrow and you look back and think...bez'khiphani mara??

so my friend...buy yourself a six tonight...organise some good meal and company and just drink two...just for the experience of drinking less than you normaly do and i tell you its the best feeling man...sometimes less is more...

BELZ-quiting drinking is not the answer, alcohol is the source of happiness, fun and everything nje...
YOU'VE GOT TO BE JOKING I HOPE YOU ARE
haaaauuuuu BELZ  you are NOT serias   not you of all peeps

phew..now that i've recovered form not only reading a well written article..but from the above statement..i want to say eish Sdi-(sdakamizwa abbrevated)  you've touched a nervel...coz there are lots of brothers who suffer from this preer pressure..but we are so quick to deny the fact that you do certain things to either fit in or please others even after you teen-years...so to find yourself lookin for a way to entertain yourself other than involving alcohol is a good move...and its a start...I think ultimately you come to a point where you start being content with what you curenntly see as boredom...and you'll start seeing it as plenty of time to think make sober decisions or commit yourself to other ventures ...So for now you're still feeling like the person you were when you used to drink -you know the feeling you used to get before your night out with frineds...like eish when is friday comin coz I'm bored"  so that should take time to get used to coz there's no booze -filled friday to look foward to....so while we can suggesst lots of activiteis...that could be fun...I think YOU need to gradually accepet that your life is now without booze and what you think is boredom will also gradually change to be something else TO YOu-(while those who still drink will say u-yabhora_

BTW  I drink myself...and I wish I'm in  your postion but hopefully oneday

I'll b back with my story of booze though

nice one sda! very nice! all i will say is i drank every weekend before i fell pregnant and enjoyed every moment of it! i always thot it was the way to enjoy yourself. since i've had the baby i found i can still have fun wihtout the alcohol or even less than half of what i used to have so it's really mind over matters. maybe you're hanging out with the real crowd...what does it say if you can only have fun with them when you're all drunk

Guys,

Events that happened in my life (I lost a loved one) led to me deciding to take a break from booze…..this is the longest break ive ever had since I started boozing at tertiary….. I must admit I am enjoyin waking up without a hangover and also I can sleep at 4 am(from a party/club) and wake up at 9 and be fresh that’s cool….. however since the break I must admit ive been conscious of everything that happens around me, the annoying things drunk people can and do(that I also probably did)… I think ive realised that I will go back to drinking since it’s the only leisure activity I know but I guess I will have to limit it….

Bizza is definitely on point with his response so is Spopo…..

My other curiousity though still is, is there nothing else we can do other than the clubs, jazz festivals etc for FUN……

I am not against these things but want to know will everything always lead back to booze?

Wine: makes me feel calm & relaxed, touchy feely(just wanna kiss my boo), makes me very horney(dont worry, not just for anyone one,for him only), maar when i drink stoo much  like this past weekend(especially  red wine), my body starts boiling up inside and then i just wanna lie down for a few minutes(not sleep) on a very cold floor( left cheek on floor) with a bowl of ice blocks next to me to chow on untill i cool off

Sdagi, until when do you intend to "stop drinking"?  Just curioussss

1. Okay...I suggest you go ice skating in North Gate (I think)...Been there once and enjoyed it...

2. Try bungee jumping...extreme but might be fun...I think...

3. Rugby....From what u've been writing on TVSA, you like rugby....a lot!  Why not look around your neighbourhood and find out if there are people who play it for fun and join in...

4. Lepogo couldn't have said it better when he said have sex and lots of it...but with one person...

5. I get the feeling that you want to get back to drinking but on a "normal" level...Not sure if I'm right...so...when you do...Identify when or which people that when you're with, do you find yourself with a massive babalaas the following day and try to minimise time spent with them...OR just tell them that u r minimising/stopping ur drinking habit and if they r true friends, they will support ur decision.

6. And just go to those parties and braais, have fun, get down but don't drink alcohol...You've managed to do it for 16 weeks...

Eish...this was hard because I can't think of any kind of fun without alcohol hey...Ask people who do not drink and still manage to have fun...

the this is that we have sort of been programmed to think that fun goes with alcohol and nothing else.mtshana, wait till u wake up next to some ugly person and some veneral baggage after a night of getting wasted, and u would never touch alcohol.

as for the peer pressure u suffered on ur bussiness trip, mtshana i think there is no such.u r giving u brothers a bad name joe!

Ma baby, take it easy don’t abuse yourself like that……. Ya neh… ive been mixing it up a bit, been drinking non alcoholic beer lately... Becks to be precise, its pretty nice, green bottle 0% alcohol…. Over the weekend I discovered that iLION is back, SAB has brought iLION back just for this festive season, its in cans and it comes in the fridge pack…. I indulged a bit, bought myself an eight pack which lasted the whole weekend… Other than that spent the weekend with my boys playing cards (crazy eight to be exact), video games (mario) and a lot of pacman….. caught a few favourite movies, scarface, ive lost count how many times ive watched it now, I enjoy it evrytime and plenty of The Sopranos episodes….. izolo ngikhe ngathi ukuvakashela kwaPanyaza for inyama but I was HUGELY disappointed with the meat….. should have gone to shisa nyama emidrand instead, damit………

For a little bit of history on the LION Lager…
