Hi everyone, my name is sdakamiswa and I’m an alcoholic…..*everybody waving* Hi. Well to tell you the truth I am not really an alcoholic, I am a recovering alcoholic. It has been just over sixteen weeks since I have had a drink…. Well that is not entirely true since I have fallen off the wagon like twice. The one time what happened is, I did have like 4 shots of tequila. The reason I did that is I was at a friends surprise birthday party and I succumbed to peer pressure and had a drink. I don’t know if this should count cause I did not like get drunk from the four shots. The 2nd time well it was recently. I was on a business trip to CT and decided to spend the weekend with a buddy. Well what happened in CT the peer pressure again, even though it was not as bad as when I am with my friends here in Jozi.
Peer pressure? You may ask… Yeah, peer pressure happened. Not only do we experience it in our teens, I have since noticed that this is something that affects even adults badly even though we might want to call it differently or even admit it at all that we experience it.
At this point you might be asking yourself what is the point of this article, well apologies for taking so long uphum’ egusheni (coming to the point). Well since I like ‘stopped drinkin’ I’ve found myself sort of getting bored. I still hang out with my same buddies that I used to drink with. I have however noticed the stupid things that ‘we’ do when we are drunk and have been embarrassed thinking to myself if I ever behaved the same way when I was drunk. I have since asked myself besides the drinking and parting what else can a black man do? What are his options? At the clubs, house parties and the braais at the parks it is always the same faces discussing the same topics, and that has now become as exciting as watching paint dry….. I am not sure if making new friends is the answer, I foresee that even then our entertainment will be the clubbing, partying, restaurants, park braais etc and same old stuff eventually. Believe me I am definitely for these activities but not on a repetitive basis i.e. every weekend……
A thought occurred to me that I pose this question to my fellow bloggers and find out, what is it that they do for fun besides the usual stuff? I am in desperate need of a hobby/hobbies that can substitute the activities that are associate with drinking alcohol. I am also facing a dilemma of whether will I ever go back to drinking alcohol since the only fun I know is that and its associated activities?
I have however done some stuff that I never used to do a lot of like going to movies, an activity that I enjoy but I am looking for more. I have since come across a place that offers go karting and am dreading suggesting this to my friends. However I am hoping since we are all in to cars and racing they will find this an interesting activity instead of the normal drinkin escapades.

Secondly a colleague has been inviting me for a while to join him at the golf course and give it a try. Problem with golf is the money needed to get you going; however I am seriously considering it and I will take the plunge since I need a hobby.

Thirdly I have always been curious at learning POKER and I did a bit of research on the net….thank gaad for google and wikipedia, my poker classes begin next week……. With POKER I know drinking goes with it… chances are in my quest for a hobby I might find one or two and I guess havin ‘a’ drink will go with it…. With POKER me and my boys will find an alternative activity with the drinking except the usual….
