Bookworm

Written by Segololo from the blog Bookworm on 21 Jan 2008
Favourite this post

I made a new years resolution – the first in over forever – to read a single book each month in 2008 so by the end of the year I would have gone through at least 12 books.

Well, I never thought my bookworm ways would resurface to ensure that within 2 weeks I had gone through 3 books and keep me away from tvsa. A real shame…

So, to take the shame away, I decided to start a blog to review all my reads – damn, if Oprah can have a book club, why can’t Segololo?

Before I review my first book, I want to know from bloggers;

1. What kind of books make you lose yourself in them?

2. Apart from your high school novels, what have you gone off and read by own volition and you keep re-reading?

3. Which author never disappoints?

4. Whose books should be banned?

5. What books would you suggest I sink my eyes into?

6. Which book was suggested to you, and you attempted to read it, but felt the time would have been better spent at the dentists chair for a root canal extract?

7. What books should I completely ignore unless I am really really really looking for something more irritating than Eskom’s power cuts?

I LOVE THIS ALREADY maybe it will convince some of those who think blacks dont read

1.What kind of books make you lose yourself in them? ...thrillers and autbiographies ..I'm loving the stuff coming out on ThaboM...just finished that Battle for the ANC soul....am now reading some book on the myth of Shaka.....intriguing stuff ...although a bit academic...still i'm learning some totaly different stuff from what we were taught at school (although its still written by a white man...I happen to know him so I trust his objectivity about the Shaka Zulu history

2. Apart from your high school novels, what have you gone off and read by own volition and you keep re-reading? ...an autobiography by Frank MacCourt "angela's Ashes, I cant get enough of it..and I've read some of John Grishams twice

3. Which author never disappoints? John Grisham..and Steve Martin

4. Whose books should be banned? No ones...you can just ignore them until the author improves his/her writing ..but censorship is so 80's

5. What books would you suggest I sink my eyes into? Frank Mcourt mentioned above provided that the Irish humor appeals to you..you'll be laughing all the way thru it..and Maya Angelou..Terry Macmillan's unpolished raw ghetto style might also appeal if you are not fussy with the writing style...also try Ken Follet, Lawrence Sanders ...those are my "unputdownables"  for now  I'll be back for more..

6. Which book was suggested to you, and you attempted to read it, but felt the time would have been better spent at the dentists chair for a root canal extract? .Lord of the Rings

7. What books should I completely ignore unless I am really really really looking for something more irritating than Eskom’s power cuts? ..Mills and Boom/n collection...unless you love you daily soapy dose of days/allmychildren/sunsetbeach/BOB in that order..and you have a power cut..than they ould be your alternative....LOL.

thanks Sego maybe I'll get to find out what other peeps are reading..coz I havent had time for the library

Nice one Sego , last year in November i started my love of novels, i used to read before but for some strange reason stopped reading, probably because of the price of books, but i started reading my soapie books by Danielle Steel and a bit of Sydney Sheldon, i've never read any autobiographies or action or thrillers but i was just thinking the other day that its what i want to do this year, so this blog will be good for me, i'll get ideas of what to buy before i completely waste my money on some boring auto's.

nice one Sego! for now i'll reserve my comment till later.

i do still read sometimes but find it takes about a month to finish a 200 small page book whereas before i'd read a 700+ hard cover in 2-3 days! *sigh*

I cant stand self help books, and the idiots guides books. My most interesting reads to date has been biographies(dream deferred in particular) bought Spud as a gift, wrapped and I ended up opening it for one of Mzantsis greatest writes.

The Capitalist Nigger is too honest-Rich dad series is too good to be true,in fact a few websites are now dedicated to prove the guy as a liar.

Other than that I still have my old copy ya Of Mice and Men,To kill a mockingbird,Animal Farm and its been a while since I bought any self help mumbo jumbo,And I WILL NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO BRING THE SECRET INTO MY HOUSE.

Its worse than extracting the root canal....Other than that I am open to most of the books you guys have rea and will look into them very soon.

Darkies do read after all, howzit peeps. My two cents worth. If you want to enjoy whatever you are reading try reading South African (black) writers. Dont get me wrong that's what I am into so I cant comment about other writers. My favorate book of 2007 was Room 207 by Kgebetli Moele. I tell you that young man knows how to play with words and keep you entertained. Also if you can handle matters of sexuality and their complications try E Lynn Harris. Terry McMillan never disappoints. But my best bet is still south african scribes are the best. I prefer to read something I can relate to.

How about Uphuya wasemshwathi or something along those lines those books are so good but I guess we need to read queen's books to feel like we are really reading.

KeFab E Lynn harris talks about everything what I meant if you are not offended by description of sexuality (in all forms) then you can reat his books. It's not explicit but it can offend sensitive readers. I remember a born again friend of mine was reading one of my books by this author and she was loving it until she realised one of the characters was bi-sexual and she stopped there and then.

I read a lot but some South African books are boring. I love to read a book that will take me to places that i have never been before, Milan, Paris, Warsaw, World War 1. I love books that take me there, that paint the picture clearly. My all time favourate author has to be Lesley Pearse, all her books are about individuals and the hardships of life. You should try them, i loveeee the one called Camilla, Rose and Till we meet again. You will have to read them yourself to get what i mean.

WhiteSockGirl
22 Jan 2008 03:39

What kind of books make you lose yourself in them?
Psychological thrillers

My favorite book:
The Quiet Game – Greg Iles
Greg Iles is my favorite writer but his books are not easily available in Namibia. I only read two books of him (The Quiet Game and Sleep no More) - a friend bought them in the states for me. If you are into psychological thrillers, I highly recommend Iles.

Since I can’t get my grabby paws on Iles’ books, I lose myself in the Alex Cross series (author: James Patterson) and the Alex Delaware series (author: Jonathan Kellerman)

Alex Cross series: (author: James Patterson)
James Patterson created Dr Alex Cross, a psychologist, who is employed by the Washington DC Police Department as a profiler. Alex’s wife was killed and he has to raise his two children.
The series took you on a journey of Alex’s professional life, Alex the father, Alex the lonely man, Alex in love, the abduction of Alex’s pregnant fiancée, Alex’s heartbreak, Alex’s custody battle…
And through it all, James Patterson created just the right emotion. I love Alex Cross.

Alex Delaware series: (author: Jonathan Kellerman)
Alex Delaware, a child psychologist, and his best friend, Milo Sturgis (a gay detective) solve murder mysteries.
Robin, an artist love, is Alex’s love interest. I fell in love Alex because he just knows how to treat a woman, how to make her feel special. When later in the series, the relationship fell apart, I wanted to be the woman who take care of him. Alex then got involved with Allison (a fellow psychologist). I could not warm up to her because she just was not Robin.. or me.

And to keep the flame burning in the bedroom, I always consult Tracey Cox. The woman knows her stuff.

Lepogo said>>And I WILL NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO BRING THE SECRET INTO MY HOUSE.    ha ha ha ha ha....talk about a marketing coup....even the title was really cheesy and evrione bought it.....anyways...Lepogo..I read an article about someone who actually wrote a book on self-help books...LOL...her idea is that too much self-introspection can actually drive you nuts, when you're actually looking for serenity...she says she went thru more that fifty different titles..and she found herself scrutinizing evrything in herlife, until she became a nuisance in her family, then she realised tht she was fixing it while it wsnt brken, (maybe skewed ..hi hi ) and this reminds me of oyur random ramblings in the other article...LOL

having said that  ...I still love me some Chicken soup for the soul...and some of JAck Canfield books have saved me at times when I needed some uplifting thoughtts, I think you should take them with a large doze of salt and be very choosy because some of them actually make sense and you learn some essential truths....as long as you remember that life doenst come with a manual...

BTW  I'm suprised no one has mentioned Alison's journey I have a life"...which was about her being raped and stabbed to death...evrione was so into the book..early 2000s..but i guees it was not the powerful writing but the storyitself that sold it.....

Hello bloggers.  This a topic very close to my heart, I just love reading! I'm 1 of those who cant go to the loo without something to read (ok, maybe 2 much info)

1. What kind of books make you lose yourself in them?
Any John Grisham book

2. Apart from your high school novels, what have you gone off and read by own volition and you keep re-reading?
Winnie Mandela's auto-biography

3. Which author never disappoints? John Grisham and Jackie Collins

5. What books would you suggest I sink my eyes into? Spud (Just started it last night but i'm hooked already!)

6. Which book was suggested to you, and you attempted to read it, but felt the time would have been better spent at the dentists chair for a root canal extract?
Oh my gawd The Secret, that book is so over rated. Didn't finish it, i'l donate it to the library

7. What books should I completely ignore unless I am really really really looking for something more irritating than Eskom’s power cuts? Weight loss books! Absolute waste of time.

@Spo,

Chicken soup for the soul, wanted to mention it,but the lack of willpower, obviously from not reading enough self help books, cos I thought it was more of a feminine read.....

And tizoz,Im searching for it already, hopefully it will make me a better business man, with time...

The only bestseller I have wasted my energy and sleep on was the Da Vinci Code,I have come to hate it more especially with the hype that DONT wanna die..

Other than that, nothing ruins a good book like adapting it to screen,I mean,Hollywood has run out of ideas, but messing up sooo many books in the past few years is totally unforgiven, and I have a rule to NEVER watch an adaptation.

Lepogo-yeah that Davinci Code, was just too much..
as for Hollywood.....I hate what they did with my favourite book, Angela's Ashes, ..it ended up being a sombre sad story with much less humor on film whereas the author had a very light hearted view of his beginings no matter what struggles his family  went thru he just  found something humorous about it....nx!!

the reason I love chicken soup..is the idea behind it..they collected real stories from real people so that you'd be inspired not by some rcih author idea of how you sould lid your life..insted they make you realise that YOU can do something about your own situation becase every elephant has its own truck to carry....

I guess if you wnat somethin less feminine to motivate you...Mens health-ok thats not a book....but still)-which I subscribed to at some stage- has some humorus motivational pieces form different contributers..( and you'll finish it faster LOL

MissK...on Jackie Collins lowononkroyi kagogo was here in SA  and most journos were NOt impressed by her personality...i guess she is what she writes......of course its pure escapism  so if you like glitz and glamour you'd be hooked on her

There's a Tsotsi in the boardroom takes bewildered advertisers and marketers on a guided tour of exactly what makes the South African market tick. It's a story as old as history itself. Everyone wants to be a chief - whether it's in a boardroom, a parliament, a church or on the streets. Despite the odds having been stacked against them, many people in South Africa still made it. And many more didn't wait for opportunities to open up - they simply broke down the doors. You may find this title, at times, a little uncomfortable and a bit raw, but the author says: 'what do you expect? I am a product of Bantu education; I can only tell it like it is. But not because my vocabulary is limited. And I don't understand big words like 'diplomacy'.' The author is Muzi Kuzwayo - Segolo

Back in the day I loved reading books by Danielle Steel, Sydney Sheldon, Jackie Collins, etc.

Now I'm more into the spiritual stuff like "The Purpose-Driven Life" by Rick Warren, books by Joyce Meyer, Myles Munro, am currently reading a book I got for Christmas called "Heaven is is so real" by Choo Thomas, I find that these types of books has made me more mellow and I don't get easily stressed out now, life is too short to let trivial things upset you.

1. What kind of books make you lose yourself in them? Mario Puzo, I have only read The Last Don and Godfathers but he is my new fav author cant wait to read the rest of his books.

2. Apart from your high school novels, what have you gone off and read by own volition and you keep re-reading? I am the only person I know who still has a library card, it’s a secret though, not good for my image.

3. Which author never disappoints? Marion Keyes.

4. Whose books should be banned? Self help books.

5. What books would you suggest I sink my eyes into? Spud was the best book I read last year, had me laughing, smiling and crying.

6. Which book was suggested to you, and you attempted to read it, but felt the time would have been better spent at the dentists chair for a root canal extract? The Secret and Capitalist Nigger

7. What books should I completely ignore unless I am really really really looking for something more irritating than Eskom’s power cuts? Mills & Boon

@Spopo, so you are a courtroom drama kinda guy?

22 Jan 2008 06:34

OK, my boss is out... I can now reply to this interesting article. I was worried he'll wonder what on earth im typing with such dedication.

What kind of books make you lose yourself in them?
I buy book like I do movies. It depends on what space i'm in in my life, then when i read the backcover, i find that somehow reading will have a significance in my life. And i like a lot of controversial books.

2. Apart from your high school novels, what have you gone off and read by own volition and you keep re-reading?
Novels, I always enjoy Clifford Irving's books. I think that all because his "Final Argument" was the first book I bought with my own money, back in High School. And John Grisham is good.

3. Which author never disappoints you?
I love Max Lucado. I've read most of his books. Recently, *Face your Giants* where he basically takes the David & Goliath story and gives it a "today" meaning. I read the book over and over again and i get a different meaning all the time. He practically takes me and places me in David's shoes & i realise how overcoming problems is all in my mind. I learnt from that book that I should hate my problems enough to kill them. What you are going through should frustrate you enough to give you the urge and the strength to get rid of it, and its all in the mind. The first thing David said when he became aware of Goliath, he said "Who is this uncircucised Philistine that is mocking the name of my God?" So, from the  beginning, nje, he undermined him; same way i should do with all difficult situations ai go through in life.

4. Whose books should be banned?  Definitely Dr Phil's wife.

5. What books would you suggest I sink my eyes into?

6. Which book was suggested to you, and you attempted to read it, but felt the time would have been better spent at the dentists chair for a root canal extract? The Secret

7. What books should I completely ignore unless I am really really really looking for something more irritating than Eskom’s power cuts?
Robin Mcgraw's Inside my heart. I still havent fineished reading it.

@Carino - I have read the Secret and yes it did not do if for me - but that does not mean it was a waste of ink...if ppl like Amazing say the book was Amazing, it means something totally different - Um not chewing, just dat if the book speak French and wena ukhuluma isiSwahili it doesnt mean dat the book is not talking to anyone @all.

@Sponono: So is Fred Khumalo.....I like this "beef" that seems to exist between him and David...they are crazy!  Justice is cute....well I can confess that I always wait for his part on E-news...I like the way he speaks ( o na le diteme)

I'm gonna buy At Risk so that I can read the chapter he (Justice) wrote>>

It reminds me of a book called DIANETICS, two of my friends read it and passed it on to me 2 years ago, i am stuck on the first paragraph.

@Zee Babes

Firstly, i thought i was entitled to me own opinion. What I say about The Secret is entirely what I think, Mna, myself, ke le i-one.

We just have different opinions, that's all. I didnt mean the book didnt appeal to everyone. I know people have different tastes and believe me, I DO know.

Titles that I still need to read by Frederick Bafana Khumalo are:
Bitches' Brew
Touch my Blood ...or something along those lines
Seven steps to heaven,  I think

I think Barry Ronge is the best thing since individually wrapped cheese....David Bullard smokes too much for my liking and Justice Malal's lazy eye makes me concentrate more on it than on what he is spewing..

Fred Khumalo is the man.....

I like Barry and his no-nonsense attitude. I remember people moaning about  a nude picture that was on tv magazine because it was not sensitive to children....and he said something like:  'What do you think those children see when they look at the mirror after they hv stepped outside the shower'.  this line cracked me up!!!

1. What kind of books make you lose yourself in them? "How Stella got her groove back"...Wow, the book is even better than the movie! You feel what the writer wants you to feel, and she paints a perfect picture!  Also well written...I've read it I don't know how many times and I still enjoy it.

Guys, I would like to read "He's just not that into you"! Anyone??? Pls hulla??? I promise to bring it back as soon as  I'm done! Lol

PS: the way Justice Malala speaks...slow..and...eish...off nje!! I always struggle to concerntrate when he is making a point....

Im sorry LM,but to digress, and Im sure many people will agree with me on this one that "ALL THESE POLITICAL ANALYSTS AND ALL THE EXTREMISTS MUST ALL BE LINED UP AND SHOT"

Dianetics was written by the founder of the Church of Scientology,so go figure, also was given a copy a few years back. And with all these load shedding, one of this good days I will use to get my braai fire going..

I couldnt write earlier,my all time favorite authors are the Pan African writers, the likes of Frantz Fanon,Ngugi wa Thiongo,Wole Soyinka,Chinua's earlier works and theres a book called Mhudi,I think it is written by Sol Plaatjie which chronicles Batswana's trek from present day Congo up to where they currently are both in Free State and North West.Beautiful...

@Segololo
No we are not Congolese, man. In fact some of the dialects in Zambia,Angola and Congo have strong similarities to Setswana. It goes on to talk of how they moved from there and settled ko Botswana,How Rratshidi and his brother moved down sotuh, their fallout, why Tau moved, why Montshioa stuck around and the other tribe that moved to the Free State.

A very fascinating read.

Yeslike, I am very embarrassed to admit that I am one of those blacks who don’t “read”…If I am not “reading” some heavy manual about work I am busy trawling the net for ‘stuff’, so not having time is just not an excuse … infact I made a resolution this year to read at least two books, 1 before June…… I always jot down interesting books that I hear people talk about, for now though I’d like to sink my teeth in the one about our former springboks coach, In Black and White, anyone care to sponsor a present? My expensive ‘habit’ prevents me from indulging in other activities, daayyymmnn excuses…. hhmm

Oops, Sego. And I thought u weren't blogging yet! Mea culpa ... Can see from these responses that you'll have your work cut out on the reading front!! Maybe you're going to end up doing an Oprah's Book Club type of thing ... hey, that's a thought. What a far cry from Big Brother, or what :) ::::::: Anyway, you must make some time and space for Alice Walker. :::::::: @Mmakwena: Also deviating ... terrible about Basetsana's baby. What got me, too, was a quote in Sunday World from a source saying Bassie's doctor from Europe tried in vain to save the baby "but unfortunately God was not on her side". That hurts. God was not on her side????? Hey no. How can people say things like that? ::::::::::: @Lekese: Managed to get my hands on 'Some of My Best Friends are White' while in the Cape, but it was a mission! Tell NN that the book's marketers need to up their game!!! :::::::::: And a Happy New Year to everyone ...
