When offered a choice of 10 reality shows, TVSA readers decided the one they would most want a South African version of is Cheaters.
In the 5th weekly TVSA Poll the question posed to readers was as follows: "Which international reality show would you like a local version of?"
Cheaters, the American version of which airs on e.tv, came out tops, garnering 126 votes out of a total of 547 (23 percent of the votes).
The only other show to crack more than 100 votes was America's Next Top Model (which also airs on e.tv), which would naturally become South Africa's Next Top Model should it ever get made.
SABC3's The Amazing Race came third with 90 votes, although sadly it's highly unlikely a copycat version of the American one could ever be made here - the cost of it is far too prohibitive.
Instead we'll have to continue to suffer through the occasional weak attempts to make something similar, such as the stupendously bad Magic Cape Race which mercifully ended early in January.
These are the full results of the poll:
Cheaters would be fun, although life-threatening to anyone who took part. All the more fun for us, of course.
A local version of The Bachelor would be interesting, if we could find a decent bachelor. Interracial relationships would be the order of the day, since the bachelor would certainly be a different race to at least some of the girls vying for his attentions.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has its appeal, but only because so much money is spent on making over the (invariably huge) homes in the US version. We marvel at how awesome all their new stuff is.
Here we'd get some dodgy contractor who would use cheap materials and have the misfortune of having the new flatscreen TV "fall off the back" of his truck.
It could only work if a lot of money was spent on it, which is probably true of all these shows.
America's Got Talent? We tried that with the awful 30 Seconds to Fame on SABC3 in 2004, which did nothing but prove that South Africans most definitely do not have talent. Or if they do, the show sure didn't find them.
Top Chef would be fun with a local flavour (this week's task: cook us something using pap, wors, Mrs Balls chutney and, of course, some fennel); Project Runway would give local designers a huge boost (hopefully); and Last Comic Standing would be nothing but excrutiating.
What we can't understand is why The Contender came last in the poll, especially considering South Africa's historical association with boxing.
We've produced numerous world champions over the decades and have always had a very strong stable of boxers who compete internationally and locally.
Yet although the show is set in the world of boxing, it's less about the sport and more about the individuals - their emotions, their mental strength, their hard-luck stories and their desperate fight for survival using the only means they have at their disposal: their fists.
Unlike most reality shows this one features contestants who have genuine talent and skill in their field, which heightens the reality aspect of the show. When they lose they can't just shrug their shoulders and say "Oh well" - they have to take that loss into the real world, and carry it with them.
It's a heart-wrenching, inspirational show, and particularly appropriate to South Africans. It's our pick of the poll.
The next Weekly TVSA Poll is now live on the right hand side of the site. This week's question is a simple one: "Which broadcaster has the best website?"
Take a look at their various websites and when doing so judge them on their look, their ease of use, the information they contain, the features they have and any other criteria you like.
