Lost Episode 402Confirmed DeadWow. What an interesting episode! The mystery deepens. The plot thickens…. My mind is still in a tizzy trying to figure out what is going on. Sometimes I wonder why I even try when we all know that in a few episodes something will happen that will just blow all my theories into teeny tiny pieces. But try I must!
In the first of the episode’s flashbacks, it’s revealed that the remains of Oceanic 815 are found by treasure hunters. Throughout the remaining flashback sequences, we are introduced to four new cast members in a really novel way.
The first newbie that we are introduced to is Daniel Faraday - who sits in his apartment in Essex, Massachusetts watching the footage of the plane wreck that is being splashed across all news broadcasts. For some reason, he’s very moved by it.
Next, we are introduced to Miles Straume in California. Miles, it transpires, is a ghost hunter. A frakking ghost hunter!!!
Charlotte Lewis we meet in Tunisia. She’s an anthropologist visiting an archaeological dig where something has been found. Surprise, Surprise. It’s a polar bear. With a Dharma collar.
Frank Lupidis is a pilot living in the Bahamas. He’s also watching the wreckage footage. We learn that he was supposed to be the pilot of Flight 815.
And in the final flashback Naomi chats to Matthew Obadon (who, I’m sure you all recognised as the man who visited Hurley in his flash-forward last week).
So, what have we learnt from all these flashbacks. Quite a bit I think. At first, I just couldn’t imagine why the team would consist of an anthropologist, a physicist and a ghosthunter. Ok, I got the Ghosthunter part; I mean the island is just loaded with paranormal activity – there’s Jacob, dead people, whispers in the jungle… Luckily for me, someone pointed it out to me (thanks!!!) and it makes a bit more sense that it did before.
But, what I think the most important revelation of the flashbacks are the words that Matthew Obbadon says to Naomi when she queries the possibility that there could be survivors. “The are no survivors” he says. I read two things into this (and, as usual, I could be totally wrong). The first is that the plane wreckage discovered is most definitely a setup... a decoy, if you will. And secondly, Matthew doesn’t care one bit about rescuing anyone, and, if you read a bit deeper, frowns upon any attempt to have anyone rescued at all!
Anyway, back to the island and the rest of the episodes events. Picking up from where “The Beginning of the End” ended last week, Jackass and Kate find Dan. They eventually locate Miles who insists on being taken to Naomi’s body. He does his ghost-talking/meditating/ communication thing and decides to believe Jackass and Kate (about them not killing Naomi).
Soon, Miles and Dan are overpowered by Sayid and Juliet. They trek further into the jungle looking for the other 2 newbies, and eventually come across Vincent wearing Charlotte’s transponder tied to his collar. They realise that Locke has Charlotte.
Meanwhile, Frank crawls up a ledge and shoots a flair. He’s eventually discovered by Jackass and company. And would you believe it, his helicopter is still whole. Yay, rescue!
Sayid, being the totally awesome fixer-upper that he is, says that the helicopter is in working order. Juliet and Frank chat as she cleans up his bruises. He learns her name and informs the other 2 newbies that Juliet is a local. The atmosphere changes immediately. They want to know where he is. He who??? The newbies reveal that they are on that island for one man, and one man alone – Benry!!!!!
Elsewhere on the island, Locke and his gang trek through the jungle. Sawyer is disgruntled because he thought that they were on their way to the barracks. But Locke says that they need to make a stop at a cabin first. Hurley tells them that the cabin is “over there” and then immediately changes his story. But Locke and Benry both realize that Hurley has seen Jacob too.
Locke also informs the group that he is taking instructions from Walt, albeit a taller Walt (LOL) and Walt told him that the newbies are up to no good and should be stopped. After Sawyer scoffs at this, Locke lifts his shirt to reveal of the most awesome things yet – a bullet wound – entering from his torso and exiting from his back. He then utters the coolest line yet “
If I had a kidney there, I’d be dead”.
Well, anyway, the group comes across Charlotte, ties her transponder to Vincents collar and send his off. Somewhere along the way, Benry shoots Charlotte (having stole Karls gun when he wasn’t looking). But Charlotte has a Kevlar vest on and is still alive. Locke decides that he’s had enough of Benry and wants to kill him. That’s when the biggest jaw-dropper of the episode happens. Benry spews out information on Charlotte and the other newbies. He has a man on the boat!!!
Oh boy!! At that point, I wanted to throw my beloved pot plant at the TV. I mean, come on!!! Arghhhh!! It’s all so damn frustrating. Now we’ve go to wait a whole damned week for the next episode.
Significant points are:
• Obviously the is the most important revelation – the newbies are after Benry. Why?? What do they want with him?? What is so important about Benry that they are willing to risk an entire plane disappearing... hundreds of people dead … Who
is Benry??
• I honestly believe that the plane crash was a setup. But how? Why? Is it really a setup like I believe or is it some sort of time rift? I’ve been assuming all this time that we’ve been viewing flashbacks. Could it really be flash-forwards?? But that would mean time-travel.
We’ve encountered what I think was time-travel before – Desmond’s flash-back/forward/time travel episode last season (Flashes before their eyes)
• Naomi and Matthew’s discussion on the island. He is obviously aware of the island, but has probably had difficulty finding it previously. But he seems very confident that they will find it. One point he didn’t seem to have considered though, was the possibility of Naomi being killed. How does this affect the newbies’ mission? Especially considering that they are now, in essence, prisoners of the Losties.
• Benry, that wonderful, crazy, audacious man knows what the newbies are on the island for. According to him, he has a man on the boat. A man on the boat! Seriously??? God, my head hurts. What is he hiding from? Is this man blessed with extraordinary foresight or is he just a very careful planner? One can now understand his insistence that the newbies not be allowed on the island.
It’s about survival – his survival. But I still think that there’s much more at stake than just
his survival. Benry is a nutcase who would do anything to achieve his aim but would that include dying for his cause? I dunno. He just seems convinced that the island is special. And I really think he believes that he is the island's prtector.
• Locke is taking orders from Walt – a taller Walt though.
• Benry claims not to know what the monster is. I believe him.
• Locke and Benry both realize that Hurley has seen Jacob. That for me, seals Hurley’s fate. He is far more important that any of us has realized. How does he fit into the bigger picture?
I’m sure I’ve left out some important fact or happening. There’s just so much going on, it’s hard to keep a track of what I need to highlight, discuss or just mention.
Hurry up next episode!
New Mysteries:• Why do the newbies want Ben?
• The wreckage of Oceanic 815 found in the ocean – is that the real thing?
• What was a polar bear wearing a Dharma collar doing in Tunisia? And what is the precise age of the skeleton?
• Just what the hell is Dharma?
Interesting Trivia (From tv.com)
• This is the first episode of LOST where we see a flashback of a character that is already dead, Naomi.
• Daniel Faraday's name is based on Michael Faraday who was a famous physicist. This is interesting because Michael Faraday discovered a relationship between light rays and electromagnetism and Daniel mentions the scattered light on the island.
• We learn in this episode that Frank Lupidus was supposed to be the pilot of Oceanic flight 815, not Seth Norris, the pilot who was killed by the Monster.
• The character Charlotte Staples Lewis' name is derived from the late Clives Staples Lewis, better known as C.S. Lewis, the late Irish author and scholar known for his writings on Christian apologetics, and most famously, the children's series The Chronicles of Narnia.
