LostEpisode 406The Other WomanInitially, when the episode came to an end… I thought that it was such a let down. Compared to last week’s fantastic episode, I felt this was severely lacking. But, after I had a few hours to think on it, I realized that it was actually really quite good. But then again, I am an eternal optimist when it comes to this show, and I seem to have the patience of a saint… which is quite surprising as patience is something I very often lack….
Anyway, this week’s Juliet-centric episode deals primarily her relationship with Benry. Last season we learnt that Juliet was in a relationship with Goodwin (the Other that Anna-Lucia killed), this week we find out that not only is Goodwin married; but his wife is the Other’s therapist – Harper.
Harper finds out about the relationship and warns Juliet away from Goodwin, not for her (Harper’s sake) or even Juliet’s sake... but Goodwin’s sake… and here’s the surprise – Harper is not the threat, Benry is. Well, we all know what happened next; the plane crashed, Benry sends Goodwin out to the tailies, Anna-Lucia kills Goodwin.
Ben eventually leads Juliet to the site where Goodwin’s body was found, and she accuses him of wanting this happen. Benry has an angry outburst and tells Juliet that she is his!
Poor woman!
Anyway, back in present island days, Daniel and Charlotte “escape” and head off to the Tempest. The Tempest, it seems, is the giant hamster running in a giant wheel to make electricity, and apparently houses large quantities of dangerous chemicals that can kill every person on the island Jackass, Juliet, Jin and Sun chase after them, but Jin and Sun go off in a different direction and are not seen for the rest of the episode.
Juliet and Jackass are running in the rain through the jungle (a common pastime on this show), when suddenly... Harper appears and tells Juliet that Daniel and Charlotte are heading for the Tempest. She also informs Juliet that Benry wants Juliet to kill them, if she must.
Charlotte and Daniel encounter Kate on the way to the Tempest where Charlotte whacks her over the head and she passes out. Way to go, Charlotte. I like you much more already. Later, Jackass and Juliet find the unconscious Kate and while Jackass attends to her, Juliet sneaks away.
She reaches the Tempest and has an encounter with both Daniel and Charlotte. Daniel informs her that they are there to neutralize the chemicals contained there, and after a not-quite tense countdown, Daniel succeeds in neutralizing the chemicals.
Kate and Jackass find them, but Kate (as usual) is not convinced and goes off to see for herself. Juliet explains to Jack that Benry regards her as his, and that she believes that Benry is going to win this battle. Jackass and Juliet share a kiss.
Meanwhile, in Locketown, Claire questions Locke about Miles… but Locke, now the new dictator of Locketown is having none of it. Later, Locke takes Benry his meal. Benry doesn’t seem to be the least bit bothered that Locke knows about his 3.2 Million deal with Miles, and then bargains with Locke.
In exchange for some pleasanter living conditions, Benry will tell Locke all he knows. He leads Locke to a wall safe, and a videotape which shows Charles Widmore beating up one’s Of Benry’s men. Ben also gives Locke a folder and tells him that the boat belongs to Charles Widmore, and that he (Widmore) will exploit the island.
Locke wants to know who Benry’s man on the boat is; Benry tells him (but not us, alas!)
Ooh. Interesting. You know, I’m beginning to buy the “Michael is Benry’s man on the boat” theory. I know it’s been brought up here, on this blog as well as on the forum, and I really couldn’t see how it could be, but from Benry telling Locke that he needs to sit down for the revelation… well, it could only be one person – Michael. I still think it’s a bit far-fetched, but all clues are now pointing to Michael.
So, here are what I think are the key points of this episode.
• Benry’s obsessive feelings towards Juliet. Apart from being an insane, nutter genius man, he’s now a crazy stalker too. Why don’t they just name him Lord and Master of the Universe while they are at it?!? I didn’t think Benry could be more dangerous than he already is, but I was clearly wrong. They haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.
And now that Juliet and Jackass are “together”, it places Jackass in an even more dangerous situation. I am not sure if Benry still habours these obsessive feelings towards Juliet, but I think he does.
• Juliet and Jackass’s kiss kindof seals their relationship. I thought it was sweet, and I am going to deny this if anyone ever brings this up – I actually had a moment of tenderness for Jackass! I mean, me… feeling tender towards Jackass!!!! It must be the heat, can’t be anything else.
• So now Benry is now an almost trusted member of Locketown. No matter what Benry said to Locke, Locke should not trust the man. I know I have Benry-love, and you have admit, you have to admire the man’s audaciousness; but admiring his tenacity and trusting him are two totally different things. I wouldn’t trust Benry as far as I could throw him.
• Daniel and Juliet neutralizing the chemicals. Very interesting, that. Now we know how Benry managed to kill all the Dharma people. I wonder how many more hatches are unaccounted for (and I know some of you probably know this already) and what other secrets Ben is hiding.
• Charles Widmore is the man who owns the boat. No big surprises there; it’s something that we all speculated on, but it’s good to have a straight answer. Now all we need to do is figure out how he knows about the island and Benry, and what he wants with it.
• Locke’s and Benry’s new relationship. Benry seems pretty pleased with himself, and I guess if I were him, I’d be pleased with myself too. Harper tells Juliet that Benry is exactly where he wants to be. If I am not mistaken, Miles says that to Kate (maybe) as well. I don’t believe that we should be fooled into thinking that Benry could not escape at anytime he wanted to.
He even tells Locke that if his people wanted him, they’d have him. I don’t believe it. If Harper is alive, she is still willing to follow him. If she’s not alive… then… what? Monster? Funnily enough, doesn’t all that rain and the appearance of Harper remind you of Walt appearing to Shannon…
Well, that’s all I have for you this week
What we know• Benry is obsessed with Juliet and will kill anyone who stands between them.
• Charles Widmore owns the boat/freighter
• There are enough chemicals on the island to kill everyone, although they no longer appear to be harmful
New Questions• Why does Charles Widmore want the island. How does he know about it?
• How did Harper magically appear to Juliet?
• Who is Benry's man on the boat?
Interesting Trivia (from
this site)
• When Juliet comes down to the floor where Faraday is inside the Tempest, she passes by a machine labeled "BOX MAKER". John Locke used to work for a box company.
• As of this episode we find out that yet another character has father issues. Tom/ Mr. Friendly tells Juliet that Harper had him "crying about [his] daddy".
• The scenes in The Tempest Station were shot at the World War II bunkers on the south side of Kualoa Ranch.
• One of Harper's diplomas displayed on the wall has the Hanso Foundation symbol.
• Ben is seen reading "Valis", a book by Philip K. Dick. He received it in the episode "Eggtown" from Locke. The book is about a man who thinks he's a messenger of God living in a world populated by strange people and holograms.
• "The Tempest", which is mentioned as a control tower in this episode, is a famous play by William Shakespeare, like Lost it is about people cut off from civilization on a deserted island. A tempest is a heavy storm.
