I receive a daily email from Oprah – well, I subscribed to her website so I get an email from there. Today, I opened the email and was completely speechless at what Oprah was discussing tomorrow. I thought this has to be a late April fools joke…

Since this show is showing in the States tomorrow, I can’t wait another year before we see it in mzansi. I went to Oprah’s site for a sneak peak – and stru’s gaad – Oprah interviews the couple and goes to their gynaecological checkup so there’s sonar scans and alles. I googled the man’s name and was gobsmacked by what I found out here!

Thomas Beatie, 34 and happily married for 10 years, is a transsexual man (born Tracy Langondino) that only went as far as taking testorone hormone treatments and mastectomy (removal of breasts). He never went through with the sex change. His wife Nancy, 46, had suffered severe endometriosis and had had to have a hysterectomy (removal of the womb). They wanted children but since she couldn’t conceive they decided he would do it. He stopped taking his testosterone shots and got his menstruation for the first time in eight years!

22 weeks preggies

Nine doctors turned them away and for a year they struggled to find someone willing to do the implantation for them. They were able to persist and without any hormonal assistance got preggies with triplets by being implanted with frozen semen form an annonymous donor. It was an ectopic pregnancy so they had surgery and removed it resulting in the loss of his right fallopian tube. The second one was successful and the baby (a girl) is due on 3rd July. And that is how they ended up on Oprah’s couch!

Some family and friends are not supportive. Nancy's family doesn't even know that he is transgendered!

Iyhoooo, this is...strange. When I first saw the headlines I couldn't understand why you'd change your gender and then later on decide gore you want to get pregnant (people have a right to change their minds I know). But now that I have more information to base my 'judgement' on, I understand. Still strange though. So s/he still has a veejayjay?

@ Nokubonga He still have his female organs, and the only reason he wasnt having his period was coz of the testorone hormone treatment he was on. So now, he's basically like a woman, biologically, and can thus conceive and give birth, I think .

Call me close minded but I don't think it's fair on the child - either Thomas wants to be a man and can't have children or she must be a woman and have a child.

I mean what are they gonna tell the baby when it's born?? "Um ... hi - just to let you know that your mom's actually a woman who's decided to be a man and wanted it it all so now you can explain that to your friends at school."

@Tashi, I agree with you somewhat, I do think however that at the end of the day, when wanting a child, some ppl's desperation is understandable.
The way I see it, this "guy" wanted to be a guy, but wants children as well. His wife cant bear him any, but he can, so why not?
THey could have gone the surrogate or adoption route, but why do that when he can carry the child. I dont think it was about wanting to be a woman, but about wanting a child, and since he could do that, why not.

I do worry though about the child too, cause while she might not have a problem with it, her friends at school are sure to have a field day about it, you know how mean the young ones are.

The whole "man" thing is misleading...as far as I'm concerned there's absolutely nothing WOW about this story because this is not actually a man whose conceived biologically, which would make it something out of this world, but its a woman who actually took drugs to boost her hormonal levels to develop manly features e.g: beard...who however remains sexually woman, womb, uterus, fallopian tubes...the works...

A woman's body was designed to conceive...she has conceived...where is the WOW factor?

I dont think it was about wanting to be a woman, but about wanting a child, and since he could do that, why not.
I 2nd that Rene.. its pourly abt wanting your own child, i think they wanted to experience the whole process together... the pregnancy, seeing the child coming to this earth and that smell of a new born..its a wonderful experience and i dont think people should judge them of their decision.. they are not criminals, all they want to do is to bring life in this world and to love it.

He made a choice to be a man even though he was born female. SO he needed to live with his decision on the gender he chose. Men do no get preggies nor give birth! If he was Intersex, I would totally be for this but he had been "given" a gender and he "knew or chose" that it doesn't work for him and he became what he was happy with. If the wife cannot conceive whether he can or not, he should choose other options. I aknow I am being quite judgemental but I am concerned for the child; if a gay couple adopts, they can explain to the child. How do you explain that daddy doesn't have a pip and gave birth to you?

Aowa bathong do you want a child so desperately in the sense that you will compromise his or her happiness. That child is going to face hell when he grow up knowing that the mother is a man. Who will want that trouble when the world is not yet ready for such changes. Aowa nagang bathong!

they are not criminals, all they want to do is to bring life in this world and to love it.

Off course...but the child who will face trouble for life. Just think about it..Mme ke ntate at the same time!

Sego sorry for swearing on your article but this made me really angry, can you imagine what that child will have to go through. Trying to get into the guiness book of records at the expense of his/her child. I have a feeling this is going to be a trend, anything is possible with the Yankees, now i know Bin Laden despise them so much. I am so angry i have an eeky feeling in my tummy.

yeah, i have subscribes as well. My primary dream is to be in contact with her majesty. I mean by e-mail of course. then i know once we communicate, meeting her wont be such a problem.

Call me judgemental if you like.but God knew what he was thinking wen he created male and female.First you wanna be male and when it doesnt suit your purpose you wanna be female nd pregnant at the same time.This is wrong and such a disgrace to the human race.
