On 3rd Degree this Tuesday:

Episode: Animal Abuse By Children
Broadcast date: 29 April, 2008 at 20h00
Channel: e.tv

Animal abuse is on the increase in South Africa and many of the perpetrators are young children.

In 2006, three Randburg schoolgirls set alight a mouse and watched as it burnt to death. They recorded the incident on a cell phone and their laughter is clearly audible as they enjoy the spectacle.

Last year a 17-year-old girl from the Free State beat a horse so severely that it collapsed. She and her parents were charged and received a suspended six-month prison sentence and a year’s house arrest. Some in the community believe the sentence was too harsh.

However, experts say that if violent children are not dealt with adequately - both psychologically and in terms of punishment - a cycle of violence can set in. In some cases, this can lead to more serious crimes later in life.

What are the reasons for this abusive behavior and what are the consequences? Is the criminal justice system inconsistent when handling cases like these? Is it sometimes all too easy to turn a blind eye to kids who abuse animals?

Have you considered that by showing animal abuse on TV you will probably spark copycat behaviour?

There is a lot of research to show that kids copy what they see on TV - I think you run the risk of being responsible for aggravating the problem.

When (not if) that 17 year old beats her child then maybe the community can consider their sentiments. Post her name for all to see!

That girl will get what is coming... We need to bring in an law that when you have an animal horse, cat ,dog, mouse on your premisses you need to have permit / license the whole big drama thing to get an license, that need to be renewed like all the other lisences, have visits yearly or monthly to fine those who dont do their part by taking care of the animal. Remember you chose to have the animal, the animal did not choose YOU. Thank goognes there is a Living God and Judgement day is near.

No, we cant just wait on God to do something, we should do something. There are two many double standards in society and this is an example of one. if that white girl was a black male, he would be in jail and there would be protests all over the streets on the atrocities of anmial abuse. that white afrikaner girl should get punished heavily. by that i mean put her in jail for at least 3 years and we'l see if she touches another horse again.

Any form of absuse is wrong. Emotional abuse, physical abuse... no matter what it is, it is wrong.  Even if that person is uneducated or has been abused themselves.... or have extreme circumstances at home... it still does not make it better.  No matter who it is if they have psychological issues or not.  They must get harder punishment for abuse.  Lets all be honest... SA needs dicipline.  We have by far the best country, but we just need to tighten the rules a bit.  Don't let people....if it is kids or adults... get away with hurting a fellow human being or our animals.  Discipline needs to be acted out at our homes and also within our justice system.... "If you do something wrong, you must be punished".... Yes, if there is a deeper psycological issue... they can get treatment while they're in jail.  Depending on the severity of the abuse... you should also get a harsher sentence... come on... if we don't act now, there would be nothing left of SA for the next generation.... nevermind tourist attraction... we need to stand together.

On that note.  Dont you think that more dicipline should be acted out at school and at home... and if parents or teachers arent sure how, I am sure that there are people out there to educate parents and teachers how to discipline kids.... come on people, we all know that the kids are the future.... if they do not get taught what is wright and what is wrong from the start, we are bound more chaos than what we already have.

What on earth has it got to do with race, please explain to me!!!! I am white and I tell you now give me that white Freestate girl, and i will show you what to do to her, and the same for the boys with the mice. Race has got nothing to do with it.
But if we can look at the real issue ANIMAL ABUSE it would sort out a lot of problems if the laws could be made harsher and people commiting the offence coulod spend time in JAIL. It is because we care to much about other people HUMAN RIGHTS that we can not see the mess we are making of everthing. Some people must relize ANIMALS HAVE RIGHTS TOO. If we can not look after the small things in life how the hell do we want to look after people. So please it does not matter whether you are white, black pink green or whatever STOP THE ABUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop turning everthing into a race issue and sort out the PROBLEM!!!!!! remember alot of crimes start off with animal abuse, sort that out and the war is half way won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yho that was gruesom - i couldnt even watch that. That girl is really sick - i think we need to help her isntead of looking for punishment. She's young and maybe she's acting out her feelings on animals.

Ok so here's a thing, and please check it up for yourselves if you don't want to take my word for it. Most serial killers are animal abusers when they are young. And what is the main cause of people growing up to kill? It's their home life!!! Most serial killers are abused themselves as kids, especially by their own parents. I think taking a look into the background of those children's lives is a definate good place to start. There is obviously something else wrong there...

Also, some kids are just out to be rebelious and the harsher their actions the more impressed the friends are going to be.

The three girls who went out and bough the mouse in order to burn it alive were old enough to know right from wrong, and the murder of the poor mouse was pre-meditated. They need to be punished, not helped. The mouse needed to be helped!!!! Their laughter was a true indication to their enjoyment of their crime and i say they they need to be burnt alive!!! Fair is fair!!! And that's the punishment i would hand out to them.

The girl who beat the horse - i say she should be beaten to the same extent - fair is fair!!! If you can hand it out, you must be able to take it - end of story!!!
